Firehouse Subs to open late this month

WICHITA — In September, Have You Heard? reported that Firehouse Subs is going to be opening in Eastgate Plaza at Kellogg and Rock. Now, franchisee Megan Reece confirms it.

Reece says she and her husband, Andrew, frequently visit her parents in Arkansas where they discovered Firehouse.

“We liked the experience, and we love the atmosphere,” she says.

She says the restaurant serves “high quality subs” in what she calls “a firefighter atmosphere.”

Reece says the company founders are former firefighters, and the restaurant’s decor is related to firefighting. Colors are red, white and black.

Though technically Firehouse is a fast-casual concept, Reece says its meat and cheese are steamed, so the sandwiches take a little longer to make. The bread is toasted, and vegetables are served cold on the sandwiches.

Reece says Firehouse is known for its Public Safety Foundation, which she says has given almost $8 million to first responders nationally and in Puerto Rico for, among other things, needed equipment and educational training.

“I just think it’s a very great program,” she says.

There are 700 Firehouse restaurants in 37 states and Puerto Rico.

The Reeces’ first Firehouse will be next to the KU Store and H&R Block. It’s tentatively scheduled to open in late December. Reece says there likely will be more to come.

“We’re working on getting this first location first, and then we’ll continue on if everything works just fine.”
