WICHITA — Hog Wild Pit Bar-B-Q founder and principal owner Gary Poulton has sold his interest in HR Development, which owns seven Hog Wild restaurants.
“I’ve done this for a long time,” Poulton says. He says he’s “kind of ready to do less.”
“It’s hard to do less when you have to run restaurants.”
Former Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon president and COO T.D. O’Connell purchased Poulton’s interest in the company.
“Everybody has different skill sets, and mine was the creation of Hog Wild,” Poulton says.
Poulton says he thinks O’Connell’s skill set will be to “create something much better out of that.”
“The concept has a lot more potential than I was willing to go out on a limb for as far as future development (and) future growth.”
Poulton talked with four groups about selling his interest and felt O’Connell’s background made him best suited to take over the company.
“I just felt like he was the best person or entity to take Hog Wild forward,” Poulton says. “It’ll be a better run company under T.D.’s watchful, watchful eye.”
O’Connell was with Lone Star from 1995 to 2005, the last three years of which he was president and COO.
Since then, in addition to traveling and doing real estate investments, O’Connell helped start Wichita-based NOA Group. The company, in which he’s still a partner, supplies private label apparel and other items to hunting, fishing and other outdoor retailers.
O’Connell, too, considered several options before buying into HR Development, including independent restaurants and franchises.
“It was kind of a clear choice and a great direction to head,” he says. “Gary did a great job building a brand.”
WICHITA — As scheduled, Soma Intimates is opening Oct. 6 at Bradley Fair.
The store, which sells lingerie and sleepwear, will be between Brick’s and Trio’s.
This makes the third concept that Chico’s FAS Inc. has brought to the center. The Florida-based company also owns Chico’s and White House/Black Market.
Soma debuted in 2004 and now has more than 200 stores.
Victoria’s Secret also is at Bradley Fair.
When announcing Soma in May, Laham Development vice president Cathy Erickson told Have You Heard? that some women will shop at Soma and Victoria’s Secret, although some will chose one or the other.
“It offers more women more choices.”
WICHITA — A popular pastime in some circles seems to be guessing where the west-side Twin Peaks will go.
Franchisee Rusty Rathbun is regularly asked about spaces as they become available, which has included the former Brooklyn’s Chophouse space, where Larry Bud’s Sports Bar & Grill now is, and the former Tommy’s Restaurant and Lounge and Gobi Grille spaces.
“We’ve got something else in the works,” he says. “We’ve got a better location in mind.”
Rathbun says he can’t talk about the space because there’s a restaurant in it.
“Somebody’s in it, and negotiations are under way,” he says.
Rathbun hopes to open in the space by April or May.
He says the location isn’t one anyone is likely to think he’d put a Twin Peaks.
“It’ll blow people’s mind.”
UPDATED — Menards, the Wisconsin-based home improvement chain, has finalized its deal for a store near the southwest corner of East Patriot Avenue and Buckner Street in Derby.
“It’s been a long time coming,” says Grant Glasgow of Grubb & Ellis/Martens Commercial Group.
Glasgow and colleague Jeff Englert represented North Derby Investments, which sold 46.13 acres to Menards.
Marty Gilchrist and Grant Tidemann of J.P. Weigand & Sons represented Menards.
The deal, which was in the works for a couple of years, closed Sept. 28 for an undisclosed amount.
“We recently purchased 50.63 acres in Derby, KS and if everything goes as planned, we hope to build a new Menards store on this property some day,” Menards spokesman Jeff Abbott said through an e-mail. “We are still in the initial planning stages and no final decisions have been made just yet.”
The total number of acres includes a residential property Menards purchased as well.
Glasgow says he’s not sure when construction will start or when to expect the store to open.
“They weren’t able to share that with us yet.”
This makes the third Menards that will open in the greater Wichita area.
