Carla’s Love It to close

WICHITA — Carla Whaley is closing her Carla’s Love It shop at Bradley Fair, but she’s not discussing it. Whaley referred questions to Cathy Erickson of Laham Development, the Bradley Fair developer.

“Carla’s Love It is a great store, and we’ve enjoyed having them,” Erickson says.

She says Whaley wants more time with her family. The last day of business is Thursday.

“We’ll miss Carla and wish her well.”

Larry Bud’s Sports Bar & Grill to open by fall in the former Brooklyn’s Chophouse space

WICHITA — There’s a new, unnamed owner of the former Brooklyn’s Chophouse building on West 21st Street, and he already has a tenant to lease the space.

It’s Larry Harmon, who has decided to locate his west-side Larry Bud’s Sports Bar & Grill there instead of in the former Two Brothers BBQ and Burger Grill space on West Central as he originally planned.

The owner of the former Brooklyn’s space, which was Players before that, “has a better deal for us,” Harmon says.

That space is about a third bigger than the 6,600-square-foot West Central space. Harmon says that offers “a lot of opportunities to do a lot more catering.”

He’s got a lot of remodeling ahead of him, so Harmon says he’s can’t give an opening date yet.

“It’ll be a little bit, but definitely before football season.”

Genesis Health Clubs buys new property for its Leavenworth club

WICHITA — Last summer, Have You Heard? reported that Genesis Health Clubs would add Lawrence and Leavenworth locations.

Now, owner Rodney Steven II is buying a new, larger building in Leavenworth at 2924 S. 4th St., which is a former Food 4 Less.

The club currently is in the Leavenworth shopping mall at 3400 S. 4th St.

“Since opening up our location in Leavenworth I don’t feel we have had the opportunity to serve our members in the way we are known for,” Steven said in a statement. “We are sorry it took us so long, but we were unable to get the current landlord at the Leavenworth Mall to work with us on a new lease or purchase of the building on acceptable terms. We didn’t want to remodel the existing space until we owned the building or had a long-term lease in place.”

The club owns all its other buildings.

The 26-year-old Genesis has 10 sites, including five in Wichita.

The new space, which will be ready late this year, will have new features, such as a basketball court, walking track and lap pool.

There will be a studio for the mixed martial arts and American jujitsu along with studios for cycling, aerobics, yoga, Pilates and group fitness. Spacious cardio and weight rooms will feature new equipment.

The club also will have a whirlpool along with steam rooms within the locker rooms.

“I’m excited to start construction and share with our members what we have in store for them!” Steven said.

Optimal Performance to move into new 12,000-square-foot facility near Central and Greenwich

WICHITA — Bethany and Landon Langston are building a new facility for their Optimal Performance personal training business that will outperform their existing space in several ways.

The five-year-old business currently is in 3,000 square feet near 32nd Street North and Rock Road. The new facility will be in 12,000 square feet east of Central and Greenwich at 11444 E. Central.

The property is almost 1 1/2 acres.

“We’re actually only taking up not even half of it, really, so we have room to expand,” Bethany Langston says. “One thing that we really want to do is add a lap pool.”

They’d also like a therapy hot tub eventually.

Initially, the facility will have an area for equipment that clients can access 24 hours a day. The other half of the downstairs will be open for training.

CrossFit is pretty big right now, and we incorporate a lot of that in our training … and so we use a lot of open space,” Bethany Langston says.

“Our main business is one-on-one training or small-group training,” says Landon Langston, who has been training for 10 years.

There will be several training areas within the new facility and outdoors as well.

“We’re going to have double the training space,” Bethany Langston says.

Upstairs, there’s a loft area with room for group classes, such as Pilates and yoga.

Outside, there will be basketball courts and an area for training in a sand pit.

The Langstons also are expanding their massage therapy rooms from two to five. The rooms will be sound proof.

“We want to create more of a relaxing atmosphere if that’s what people are coming in for,” Bethany Langston says.
