Reeg Lawyers opens Wichita office

WICHITA — St. Louis-based Reeg Lawyers has expanded to Wichita.

“It just seemed to us that there’s a lot of opportunity out there,” Kurt Reeg says.

“I do a lot of work with farm and ag groups and trade associations,” he says. “I was just getting feedback from some of our clients that they thought there was a need for some more experienced legal talent out there that knew the ag industry.”

Reeg has practiced law for 32 years. His firm, which includes seven lawyers, is not quite nine years old.

Initially there will be two lawyers in the firm’s 2,900-square-foot Wichita office at River Park Place, which is at 727 N. Waco.

The practice will include agriculture and farm law, environmental law and alternative dispute resolution among other things.

Reeg, who opened the office Monday, also opened a third one in Center, Mo. He’s been looking to expand for a while.

“I only want to do that when it makes sense.”

He decided that offering his services to Wichitans makes sense because “they wanted more help, and we had help to offer.”

Assistance League of Wichita to reopen resale shop in new space Tuesday

Steven Hernandez, with Bauer and Son Construction, puts the finishing coat of paint on the door at 2431 E. Douglas, the new home of the Assistance League shop.

WICHITA — Almost a decade after starting a search for a new building, the Assistance League of Wichita is opening in new space Tuesday.

“It is looking so great,” says the League’s Helene Longhofer of the new building at 2431 E. Douglas, just down from Douglas and Grove. She says the shop “has a real boutique look.”

The building, which the Assistance League owns, used to be home to Paradise Antiques. The Assistance League used to be in rented space down the street at 2611 E. Douglas.

As Have You Heard? reported in October, the new space’s 6,000 square feet is more than double the size of the old store.

The resale shop sells an array of things including clothing, jewelry and household items.

The 28-year-old League is a chapter of the nonprofit national Assistance League. The local League provides assistance to Wichitans with programs such as Operation School Bell, which provides children with new clothes for school. The League also gives scholarships to the Wichita Area Technical College and Butler Community College.

The resale shop, which is run by volunteers, raises money for the League’s projects.

Larry Steckline sells Grand Lake holdings

WICHITA — Businessman Larry Steckline has sold several businesses he owns at Grand Lake in Oklahoma to the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe.

“It’s a great opportunity for them,” he says, “and a great opportunity for me to get rid of some work. I’m real happy about the deal.”

He sold a marina, a store, two paddle-wheel show boats, a restaurant and convention center at an undisclosed price. The sale includes eight acres of land and more than 1,200 feet of shoreline.

“You know, too much is too much,” Steckline says. “I want to slow down a little bit.”

He now spends about four months a year in Florida.

“I’m past retirement age.”

That doesn’t mean Steckline, a longtime broadcaster, is giving up his KWLS, 107.9-FM here.

“I am enjoying that radio station more than any I’ve ever owned,” he says. “I guess maybe it’s because I started it from scratch.”

Though it’s a long way from reaching its potential, Steckline says KWLS has grown faster than any station with which he’s ever been involved.

“Boy, is it crankin’.”
