WICHITA — There’s sweet news in Derby.
Sarah Burke and Gail White are opening Down Home Sweets at 1340 N. Nelson, which is near 71st Street and K-15.
The shop, which opens Tuesday, will sell pies, cakes, cookies and sweet breads, such as muffins.
“It is completely made from scratch like your grandma or your mom would make,” Burke says.
Customers can order sweets in advance or stop in for a slice of something sweet.
“That’s something we’re really excited about,” Burke says. “We want people to feel comfortable and visit.”
They’ll serve coffee, tea and milk and are working on getting soda in glass bottles. Free wireless also will be available.
“We’re encouraging people to even bring their lunch,” Burke says.
She thinks there’s room for meetings as well.
For now, Burke says they’ll use about half of their 3,000 square feet.
Eventually, they hope to add a banquet room and a gift shop.
Burke says she isn’t concerning herself with popular fads of the moment, such as cupcakes and cake balls.
She’s thinking mini pies that are so self contained they don’t even need a tin.
“We’re hoping to start a new trend with these mini pies, actually.”
