Jack’s North Hi Carryout sells at auction

jacksUPDATED — There’s a new owner of Jack’s North Hi Carryout.

Austin Herron, 25, will run the restaurant. His grandmother purchased the building for $106,000 at auction today.

“She’s kind of my mortgage company,” Herron says, laughing.

Barbara Moore has been running the restaurant since the November death of her husband, Joe, who reopened Jack’s in March 2009.

Moore says the restaurant was her husband’s labor of love — not hers.

Herron has been wanting to own a “burger joint,” he says, and Jack’s seems to fit.

He plans to keep the name, recipes and even the same food vendor.

“You know, my grandfather’s name is Jack, and the name (of the restaurant) is already established. . . . It would be kind of dumb to change it.”

In the majority of the six-decade-old restaurant’s history, there were only two owners.

In recent years, ownership has been less stable.

Herron hopes to change that.

“We’d like to keep it going for another 50 or more years.”

Jack’s Has been one of my Familys Favorite Eaterys. Being that, all of us (Except Me) Are North High RedSkins! It was always a Treat my Father shared with us kids.

Jacks has always been one of my favorite places to eat. When I was a youngster in the late 50′s, I used to pick up the trash out in the parking lot for Jack, everyday of the week. A friend of mine was with me, and we would get a huge paycheck of $ 1.50 each, each Saturday morning. As I would stand in front of the counter receiving my money from Jack for a hard weeks worth of labor, I would immediately order a Cheese Burger, fries, and a drink. The most awesome thing was that I still had money left over to order again.
Good luck, Austin! With the following that Jack’s has had over the years, you will no doubt succeed.

The secret to the perfect burger off a grill is putting the buns on the grill too, under a large lid will steam them while they toast a bit on the grill. That is old school burgering!

    Good Luck Austin.

We are about to have our 45 year North High Reunion. This a landmark and should be preserved. Good food and good memories. Good Luck.

Austin, will you please also offer a veggie burger????? I would love to patron Jack’s, but I don’t eat meat. Thanks so much, and I wish you the best!

Good luck Austin! I look forward to trying your burgers soon.

We used to do a grilled cheese on a bun for those who didn’t eat meat. It ends up with what was the inside of the bun grilled and on the outside with two pieces of melted cheese in the middle. Put that with cheese fries (there’s meat in the chili) and you’re all set. The hot grilled cheese can be pulled apart to put condiments on it.

Hello Austin and fellow news readers. Let’s all hope young Austin does well in his latest business venture. I will support the restaurant as best I can when I am in the neighborhood. I lived 1/2 block South on the river (the river ran through our back yard) when I was married to my late wife. We enjoyed walking down to Jack’s every chance we had. Good times! Thank you Austin for taking over a Wichita tradition. May God bless you and please work hard at keeping it clean and financially luctative.

I meant to type the word “lucrative” at the end. Sorry.
