Lee’s Bike Shop to open at Auburn Pointe

WICHITA — Lee Engler has been a bike fanatic for a long time, and now he’s making his hobby his business.

Engler, a former landscape architect for WDM Architects, is opening Lee’s Bike Shop at 135th West and Maple.

That’s at Auburn Pointe, an Occidental Management property.

“It’s a really good location because of the neighborhood that’s there,” Engler says.

It’s also close to a lot of bike paths, he says.

Plus, Engler says, there’s not another specialty bike shop west of Interstate 235.

Engler also likes Auburn Pointe’s large parking lot and location as a good meeting point for bikers heading on west-side rides.

Lee’s will sell a variety of bikes, accessories and clothing. It also will have a full-service shop.

“I’m going to have a quite a few bikes,” Engler says.

The shop will open in the middle of March.

It’s quite a switch from landscape architecture, though Engler points out that he has designed parks and bike paths.

Engler shows his passion for biking daily. Today, he even pedaled through the snow to the YMCA to work out.

“It was wonderful.”

But with owning his own business, will he still have time to bike?

“Well, definitely. As much as possible.”

SWEET! We have needed a W. side bike shop for a long time.

There is a bike shop on WEST street.. how is that not the west side? I predict this is going to be a bike shop full of $4000 serottas and $500 hybrids for people to wobble around sedgwick county park on. Not for people who actually commute, etc.

The article doesn’t say that there isn’t a west side shop, just none west of 235.
Any shop can build a first rate commuter. Even if not in stock, there are plenty of steel frames any shop can order, and any good shop can build sturdy wheels around things like a a gen hub. All shops stock bags racks and fenders. A commuter is seldom bought “off the rack.” The thing that hinders west side commuters is secondary streets that don’t go through, and aggressive texting drivers.
West side white-flighters have needed a shop to serve them for a while. An independent shop is very welcome.

The unanswered questions are what’s the store’s web site and what lines will they carry. I’m hoping to see a couple lines in town that aren’t available in other shops. We don’t need more trek, specialized or electra
