Cafe Bistro patrons arrested on gambling charges; owner also arrested

WICHITA — Acting on a tip, police served a search warrant on Cafe Bistro at 1609 E. Pawnee at about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday and found six men gambling.

The men were arrested along with 33-year-old cafe owner Michelle Mai.

Attempts to reach Mai Wednesday were unsuccessful.

Eight electronic gambling devices, similar to electronic slot machines, also were seized along with several thousand dollars and several computers.

Menards may be coming to Wichita after all

WICHITA — It looks like Menards could be coming to the Wichita market after all.

Word is the deal for the Wisconsin-based home-improvement store to come to 37th North and Maize Road is back on.

“I guess I’d say I’m optimistic,” says Paul Jackson, who is working on a 40-acre retail development called Stonebridge on the southeast corner.

But Jackson says there’s no signed deal.

“I wish it was as solid as what you’ve heard.”

The deal first was under contract in 2008.

Good Housekeeping names Winfield’s Fire Wire one of the top products of 2009

WICHITA — In it’s February issue, Good Housekeeping named Fire Wire one of the 10 most innovative products of 2009.

“It was a total surprise that we were even under consideration,” says Todd Gentry of Winfield’s Inno-Labs, which makes the flexible grilling skewers.

“People started phoning us about it,” Gentry says.

“Hey, you’ve probably heard by now,” they said.

He hadn’t.

Good Housekeeping editors also went on “Good Morning America” to discuss the top 10 products from 2009.

“Of course, we got some play out of that as well,” Gentry says.

“It was a pretty cool honor.”

Long John Silver’s Freshside Grille to open Feb. 15 with Five Guys Burgers and Fries

WICHITA — No one planned it this way, but it turns out Long John Silver’s Freshside Grille is going to open Feb. 15, which is the same day Five Guys Burgers and Fries is planning to open.

The restaurants are in a new center in front of Lowe’s near 29th and Maize.

Long John franchisee Eric Estes says the goal was to get open by Ash Wednesday, which is the 17th, because a lot of customers on the west side said they’d like another option for fish.

He says the new Long John’s will be a more upscale version of the restaurant, with cherry wood furniture and digital menus.

“It’s very upscale compared to anything else we have.”

Ink Construction built Long John Silver’s and Five Guys.
