Billy Joel and Elton John likely to be Intrust Bank Arena’s premier concert for 2010

WICHITA — There’s a 2 p.m. Monday press conference scheduled to announce a major rock act coming to Intrust Bank Arena.

There’s no confirmation, but it looks likely that Billy Joel and Elton John are bringing their Face 2 Face tour here.

They’re performing in Denver on Feb. 22 at the Pepsi Center. Then, they’re performing at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City on Feb. 25 and at the Sprint Center in Kansas City on Feb. 27.

An employee with Live Nation, which represents Joel and John, confirms that there will be an announcement coming from the company.

The employee won’t give other details except to say, “It’s going to be a big show.”

Arena spokeswoman Beth King says she’s not at liberty to talk details.

“The press conference is being hosted by a promoter and not the arena,” she says.

A quick check of other major rock acts doesn’t show any other major artists or groups in the area in the first part of next year.

Guns N’ Roses is Canada bound.

Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck are playing large cities like London, New York and Toronto.

U2, which arena general manager Chris Presson once said is his dream inaugural act for the arena, is playing only stadiums.

AC/DC would seem to be more of a possibility than other acts since it’s playing places like Des Moines in April along with the state fair in Louisville, Ky., that month. But again, the band isn’t going to be particularly close to Wichita.

The Moody Blues will be playing all over the place, but that doesn’t seem to be a big enough group for the arena to call a press conference to announce an act for the first time.

And most of the other obvious major acts —the Who, the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Paul McCartney and Sting — don’t appear to have many shows booked early in the year.

And our final indication that it’s likely Billy Joel and Elton John?

Shortly before posting this item online, an e-mailed invitation arrived from the arena. It says:

“Live Nation and INTRUST Bank Arena invite you to the press conference to announce the premiere concert event of 2010. The concert will feature two of the world’s most renown performers same stage/same night/one incredible evening!”

Let me rephrase; he said last summer he WON’T come to Wichita because we don’t have a big enough venue. Sounds like he knew we were about to open an 18K seat arena but still isn’t interested.

AGain, when Joel and John are used to selling out huge baseball and football stadiums, Wichita’s White Elephant Arena ain’t gonna be worth it to them.

    Whatever –

I’m referring to Joel and John. Not Keith.

Elton John and Billy Joel? Loved em. 30 years ago. Bah humbug.

  • whatever3

Toby Keith does great CW music but ain’t near the draw as Joel and John. If Toby doesn’t find Wichita a profitable venue, I doubt Joel and John will either.

It already looks like it’s a go on Elton’s blog.

Whatever3: “Yeah…right. I’ll believe this one when Joel and John have been here and done the concert. Even at 18K seating capacity Toby Keith won’t come here because he can’t sell enough tickets to make it worth it even at a sellout. Joel and John are used to filling major league baseball stadiums and NFL stadiums at sellout capacity. They ain’t gonna mess with a measley 18K seat arena here.”

Hahaha! Spot on, man! Keep swinging!

    Bingo MartyMoose!! Since we’re
    bent on copying Kansas City,
    where’s the nice, multi-level
    parking garage right across the
    street?????? Waaaaaaaaa????
Oh, I know….let’s try to park
18K cars in the streets of
    downtown Wichita….GREAT PLAN!!!

After the fiasco with the Taylor Swift tickets, Wichita is learning that they will have to pay out of town scalpers thousands of dollars per seat just to see a show in the arena their tax dollars built.
Naysayers may be right. If they dont nip the scalping problem in the bud, All of Wichita will be so upset they will NEVER try to buy IBA event tickets again!

My sentiments exactly, solitary. All these people jumping for joy are headed for a big disappointment, come ticket buying day.

Please Give me NICKELBACK!!!! I’m tired of traveling all over the country to see this band. They are one of the top 20 concert ticket selling bands on the road right now. And for those of you whom say they suck. To each their own…Opinions are kind of like A**holes everyones got one and I don’t wanna smell your Sh*t.
Love Elton John/Billy Joel but like many others not on the top of my list to spend $150 bucks on right now.

    Rock On Wichita

You gotta be kiddin’ me… really? With the experience I had getting Bon Jovi and Taylor Swift Tickets?
My options: 1) Pay absorbent prices to 3rd party “scalpers”; 2) Pay American Express and every other Sponsoring Corporation, so I can get in on pre-sales; 3) Avoid $7 beer, $5 bottles of water, the agrevation and dissapointment, and keep my money for other things that yield a better return on investment.

    I’m thinking…. #3, Adios Arena
