WICHITA — Retired AT&T worker Steve Trask is bringing a bit of paradise to Wichita.
Paradise Donuts, that is.
“Well, I like doughnuts,” Trask says of his decision to bring the Oklahoma-based franchise here.
“I knew I wanted to do a doughnut shop, and they seemed to be the ones that would best fit,” Trask says.
He’s locating in the former Millers Cleaners site at 3107 W. Central.
Initially, Paradise will open in the mornings with doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, apple fritters and an array of heartier breakfast fare.
“We’re known for our sausage rolls and some of the other breakfast items, such as biscuits and gravy,” says Derrick Lepper, sales manager for the chain.
“We’re more than doughnuts, but we made our fame in the doughnut arena,” Lepper says.
The chain started in Missouri in 1967 and moved to Catoosa, Okla., in 2001.
There are 94 stores, mostly in the Midwest. This is the first one in Kansas.
“If the people around there like them, I’m sure we’ll expand,” Lepper says.
Trask hoped to open Paradise by the end of the year, but he says January is now looking more likely.
Soon after opening, Trask plans to add lunch.
“I’m seriously considering 24 hours,” he says. But, he adds, “At this point, I just want to get the place open and get going.”
