Intrust Bank Arena lands another rock act, this time of the Christian variety

WICHITA — There’s another new musical act for Intrust Bank Arena, and it’s not a country artist.

Pollstar reports that the Newsboys will play March 21. It’s a Christian rock band.

The only other rock act announced so far is Bon Jovi.

The Newsboys will appear as part of the Winter Jam 2010 Tour Spectacular, which is billed as the largest annual Christian tour.

The tour also includes NewSong, Third Day, Tenth Avenue North, Fireflight and guest speaker Tony Nolan.

This is cool! I am not a big fan of the Newsboys or New Song but the other groups are good.

Thank god they have not found an act good enough to get me to go to the arena I paid for. I would not want to waste the money going to a stupid concert like this

Wow, most of those R&B groups wouldn’t sell out the Cotillion, with the exception of Stevie, Aretha, and Beyonce, and who knows if they’d even come to the IBA.
The Neville Brothers were just IN Wichita. And really…KC & the Sunshine Band? They’re still ALIVE?

Your list does not include very many artists worthy of playing a large arena. Face it, the economy sucks right now, and there just are not a lot of worthy bands on tour. Wichita got the Rolling Stones a few years ago … just relax people. When the biggies start touring next spring/summer, you’ll get them.

Personally, I am really happy to seer that this concert tour is coming here. These are some of the better groups in Christian music today. There are quite a few people in this area that like Christian rock. That is why the shows they’ve had at the largest churches in Wichita have done so well in the past. And these people paid taxes too.

KUjazz & ‘truth’ Please get this through your heads: SMG/IBA is not the promoter, they are the VENUE. While it’s in IBA’s interest to announce bookings (and build hype, that’s part of what they are expected to do under their contract with SedgCo), they don’t directly hire the entertainment. That is done by Live Nation, Beaver, Mammoth, AEG Live and other concert promoters. SMP/IBA rents the facility to the promoters and arranges for supplementary services like security, stagehands and production technicians, and catering.

The name should be changed to Intrust ‘Religious’ Arena

This will come close to selling out every seat. This “winter Jam” tour last year at CKA had standing room only and some people had to be kicked out because the fire marshall said it would not be safe. This is a REALLY good get.

Bringing in Newsboys is a good thing. So many of the local churches have been hosting these Christian music groups. The crowds they draw can be so large that it is more than what the church can physically handle. They have actually had to refuse entrance to the church because they have been filled to their capacity. If the city can bring in a group and the group fills up the arena, which is revenue for the city, does it really matter? The city is after the revenue. The vendors are after the revenue. They don’t give hoot who is playing as long as it brings in the crowds. They are after the revenue. Money talks. IF it takes the Christian community to fill it up….so be it! So if the Newsboys are coming to town….I expect the Christian community to rise to the challenge and to fill this one up to over flowing capacity as well! BTW….their music is good too.

I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth. If IBA promises not to bring in any more Christian acts than I’ll promise to stop complaining about all the country music; Deal?

I have been to one of these Christian concerts at YMCA of the Rockies in Estes. Even if you don’t regularly attend church or aren’t that religious,(like me) I was very impressed with Third Day especially. It was a powerful experience. I am still patiently waiting for Dave Matthews to come to Intrust.

I’m all for more variety, but give us non-religious modern rock fans something. Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots, Weezer, etc…

mattj-The sad reality is that we don’t have a modern rock/alternative radio station to expose Wichitans to this music. I have XM, but I think so many people are only exposed to the music they hear on the radio. This is sad, but true. T95 just doesn’t play hardly anything newer than late 80’s early 90’s, so guess what, this is what many are used to. No Wilco, White Stripes, Rise Against, Death Cab, Silver Sun Pickups, Phoenix etc. Tulsa’s The Edge plays a nice variety of modern rock and Alternative, and they get better shows as a result. Clear channel has a strong hold on keeping our radio stations from playing anything that may be progressive or alternative. Too bad.

So I went to see Newboys last time they were in town – at Century II. So is this arena just taking regular shows away from our other concert areas, instead of bringing in new stuff? Seems like this would be hurting Century II a lot.

Hey, Lady Antebellum is coming in June – what I wonder is if all these bands are NOW coming to Wichita, what were the people doing whose job it was to bring the bands to town? The Coliseum holds more people – and most of these shows will probably be sell-outs even in this bad economy. They also would have sold out the bigger venue. You can’t convince me that the bands just didn’t like the Coliseum – they’re all about numbers, and it would have brought in more revenue. Just a thought…

I will SO be there! We always go to the Winter Wonder Jam, glad it’s going to be held somewhere a little bigger this year.
Don’t you wonder WHY Christian concerts do so well-The Rock and Worship Roadshow held at the coliseum turned people away. It was the best concert I’ve ever been to. I’ve never been embarrassed by anyone’s actions at a Christian concert…no one is drunk, no one takes of their bra and throws it at the stage, no one is swearing, I could go on and on.
Why shouldn’t Christian shows be booked at IBA? We pay taxes too. If you don’t like it, don’t go…very simple. If you don’t like country, don’t go. I’m sure you will get the kind of music you like if you will just be patient!

at least it isnt country or rap/hip-hop crap. so we wont have to worry about gang shootouts in downtown. JUST SAY NO TO ANY RAP?HIP/HOP SHOWS AT IBA. it is junk and is destroying our kids’ minds

In my channel hopping last night, didn’t I see Darius Rucker up for the best COUNTRY male vocalist, at the CMA awards?

CMA Male Vocalist of the year AND Entertainer of the year are both coming to IBA. It’s not my kind of music, but obviously it will put butts in the seats and that is what we need to start with.

Umm, the Old Barn up North does not hold more people than The Bank. Get your numbers right before you post. That’s why we built the new arena, cause the Old Barn was out of date, small, and was not building any type of entertainment district in the area. The new arena (The Bank) is bigger, newer, and big acts like newer arenas, and the entertainment district that will be built around it will be top notch.
