Gaithers to bring gospel music to Intrust Bank Arena

WICHITA — It was just yesterday that Intrust Bank Arena general manager Chris Presson said he wants to bring in all kinds of acts — not just the country music that seems so prevalent so far.

It looks like that includes gospel.

According to Bill Gaither’s Web site, he and the Gaither Vocal Band are coming to Intrust April 30.

The site, which shows a picture of the arena, says tickets will be presold starting Jan. 11. A public sale starts Jan. 25.

I wonder if the Statler Brothers are busy.

    Sigh…

When “diversity of acts” was mentioned for the IBA, I don’t think this is what was meant…

Country Gospel is still Country, right?

Word on the street is that IBA is going to offer Cowboy Church services on Sunday.

I’m trying to believe. I keep thinking it is a matter of getting less popular acts booked first or trying to appeal to the “common folk.” But now I’m starting to think they may not realize we are all not racist, abortion-protesting, cowboy-wannabe bible-thumpers. I’ll keep waiting for a decent booking ’cause I still believe . . .

My mother will be absolutely thrilled! This will be great as an early mothers day present. I just hope she doesn’t ask me to drive her to the arena.

I want a refund on my taxes. I did not pay for a continuous stream of country western concerts and now gospel music.

I’m reminded of a comment uttered by a 12-year-old while I was supervising a skating party. He desperately wanted the DJ to play Eminem (this has been a few years ago) but he wouldn’t do it. After his last, futile plea, the kid skated back over in my direction and moaned, “Man, all they’re playing is country and stupid.”

Pretty much sums up the IBA acts so far.

But, what do we expect? It might be a new, shiny arena but it’s still Wichita, not exactly an entertainment mecca. So, let’s just hope these acts are successful regardless of whether they appeal to each one of us.

Look at Pollstar people. The big rock acts are not touring right now or they have not announced their 2010 plans yet. Most of the big tours don’t start until late Spring and run into late Fall. Give it time and you will see your rock shows at IBA.

Chris is right when he says they can only book acts that are touring. If The Eagles, Stones, McCartney, Nickelback, Pearl Jam, and others are not touring, then you can’t book them. And those that are touring right now are all over seas.

Why is it so hard for people in this city to understand without bi*ching. You can’t book the group if they are not out on tour. How hard is that to comprehend. Come on people!!!
