WICHITA — Alan Shope is no longer sports director for KAKE, Channel 10.
“It was just a simple contract issue that we couldn’t work out,” says Shope, who had been at the station almost nine years.
Shope says the issue wasn’t monetary.
“I was not asking for money,” he says. “I’ve never asked for a raise at KAKE TV.”
Shope is a Wichita native who returned here to be closer to his father, George.
“KAKE’s a great place to work,” Shope says.
But with his father’s death last year, he says, “I really was looking to move on anyways.
“It’s not that big of an issue for me.”
He says he has interest from stations in Kansas City and St. Louis.
KAKE marketing director Bryan Frye won’t comment on Shope’s departure because he says it’s a personnel issue.
He says the station is looking for either a new sports director or reporter.
“At this point, we’re looking for the best person possible.”

Can’t say I’ll miss that fake, cheesy smile that Shope flashes on air. But good luck to him landing something bigger and better.
There is nothing cheesy or fake about Alan Shope’s smile or him as a person or broadcaster. What kind of a troll would write something like that about a man who poured so much of himself into his work and his community? Alan, you will be missed by all who
appreciate the energy, skill and passion you brought into your coverage of Kansas sports. And here’s a thought for “See YA” above…get a life.
So, yangeco, is Alan your son, father, or some other relation? I don’t know if his smile is cheesy or not, but I do know you sound like you’re either related by blood, marriage, or checkbook!
Ease up on Alan. He’s a nice guy, I hope things work out for him.
Shope was a good talent for KAKE. He has enthusiasm and knowledge about his field. Once again, KAKE chases away another talented individual. I thought Jan McDaniel was gone…..
