Don Hall speaks out on KZSN firing

WICHITA — Don Hall was out of town last week when Have You Heard? reported that KZSN, 102.1-FM, replaced him on its morning show with former Oklahoma City disc jockey Anthony “The Antman” Allen.

Now, he’s ready to talk. (And he says you can reach him via e-mail at donhallwichita@yahoo.com.)

So why does he think he was let go?

“Maybe to pay Brett’s salary,” he says in reference to another Clear Channel Radio morning man, B98 FM’s Brett Harris, whose contract is up for renewal.

Hall isn’t sure what he’s going to do next, but he knows what he’s not going to do.

First, he won’t leave Wichita, where he’s been on air since 1974.

Second, he’s definitely not going to do any remotes or other kind of work for Clear Channel, as vice president and market manager Tom Glade has suggested.

“You either want all of me or you want none of me,” Hall says. “I don’t care for the scraps.”

He would be open to working for Clear Channel again — Hall says he wishes everyone there the best — but it would only be under his terms.

For the five years he was on KZSN, Hall says the station tinkered with his show too much and never gave it a solid chance to gel.

“It’s chaotic,” he says.

Hall is considering leaving radio, but he’s looking at going to a new station, too.

He has a six-month no-compete agreement in his contract, but Hall says, “That’s being reviewed by an attorney.”

I’ll say it once again, I changed my morning radio routine because Don is what I liked about the morning show. I miss him!

Dancin’ Don Hall, is a class act. How can a “no compete clause” be enforced when he was run out of a job? I hope the legalities are with him. We need him on the air again.

His attorney will advise him that the non-compete is not enforceable. It keeps an individual from making a living. Also, the contract would be enforceable IF there were consideration ie., golden parachute, or if a person sells a business.

I’m sure is a great guy….but it is time to move forward. Wichita doesn’t have a very strong contemporary country station. KZSN appears to be making some moves forward. You can tell that he and Cathy Carrier never really had a prepared show. So I never listened…and didn’t like KFDI either. Now that KZSN has a new format I listen almost everyday. Also, Cathy Carrier seems to be enjoying herself more as well…at least that is how I see it. Sometimes it is just time to move on. Dance on Don…it will be good for everyone…even you.
