WICHITA — There’s a new restaurant coming to the lower level of the R.H. Garvey Building at 300 W. Douglas.
Desiree Kelsch plans to open a sandwich shop called Firefly Cafe by mid September.
“I’m trying to make . . . an intimate little place,” Kelsch says. She wants nearby business people to be able to “just kind of get away from the hustle and bustle and the stress and the strain of the office.”
There used to be a snack shop in the space, but Kelsch says she’s doing a lot of remodeling.
“I’m kind of making it nice and cozy,” she says.
There will be a reading nook and a boutique area where Kelsch will sell her own painted silk scarves and glass jewelry.
Kelsch has been a freelance graphic artist since being laid off in December.
“It’s been kind of iffy,” she says.
Kelsch decided to turn her love of cooking into a business.
“I’d like to try and keep things nice and fresh and healthy,” she says.
Firefly will have what Kelsch calls gourmet sandwiches, soups and salads along with smoothies and fruit.
“I’m trying to use everybody local if I can,” Kelsch says of vendors.
There’s room for 16 seats.
Kelsch says that “people will be very surprised what I’ve done with this space.”
