Eye Kandy Custom Paint & Pin-up Portraits coming to Delano

pinupWICHITA — There are several new businesses coming to the Delano area, including one that features pin-up girls.

Aleycia Crawford hopes to open her Eye Kandy Custom Paint & Pin-up Portraits at 915 W. Douglas for July’s Final Friday.

Currently, her business is at 21st and Broadway.

“I want something nicer, bigger,” Crawford says.

“They’ve fixed up the area,” she says of Delano. “It seems to work together really well.”

Crawford was an air-brush artist for Big Dog Motorcycles until last year.

First, she went part time.

“I wanted to start pursuing working for myself,” she says. “I’m pretty much a Jill of all trades.”

Then in May 2008, she was laid off.

Her business gradually started growing — and changing.

“To make my pin-up paintings more realistic, I got into basically having real women pose for me,” Crawford says. “It kind of turned into a lot of people wanting pin-up pictures done.”

A makeup artist helps Crawford’s clients with vintage hair and makeup.

“We try to do portraits that are fun . . . and make women feel good about themselves,” Crawford says. “It’s kind of something different that’s not really here.”

Her focus on women is a fit for Delano.

“I like that there’s a lot of women-owned businesses down there,” Crawford says. “That’s really cool.”

Oh, grow up! This isn’t the 1940’s, and we don’t need another excuse for women to be exploited, viewed as property or as an object. What a joke.

I think your business sounds wonderful.
With your help a women can have a picture that she wants for herself or for someone else.
As a women who started the movement in Delano in 1991, I say go for it.
You can be a perfect fit into Delano.

Erika01: Part of women’s lib is the ability to choose what we do and don’t want to do. Deciding to have a self-portrait painted in the style of your choice is part of that freedom. It’s not necessarily my cup of tea but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with someone else liking it.

So, why do the “feminists” have problems with strippers?

Fleetwood: Not to start a whole ‘nother thread, but I think the reason some “feminists” have problems with strippers is the reason for becoming one. Granted, there are girls who dance because they enjoy it and want an easy way to pay the bills–but there are many more who are entangled in drug abuse and prostitution. I have no problem with nakedness in public but it should definitely be for the joy of it and not to support a pimp or dealer.
