New iPhone app is Wichita based

iphoneA couple of Wichita software engineers hope to quit their day jobs for games. Not to play games, but to create them.

Gregg Bolinger and Hycel Taylor recently had their first game approved as an iPhone application.

“It got approved in eight days,” Bolinger says. “It was really fast.”

He says anyone can pay $99 and submit an “app” to the iPhone App Store, and a team of people who work for Apple review whether to make the application available to iPhone users.

“It’s an interesting process because I’ve heard of apps sitting in the review process for months,” Bolinger says.

Bolinger and Taylor’s game is called TrainBeaser. It’s a game of opposites, or sort of a brain teaser to test how well you know your right from your left.

There are several tiers of pricing for the game internationally. Apple gets 30 percent of the profit and Bolinger and Taylor share the rest.

It’s not like the guys can quit their day jobs just yet, though.

In about two weeks, they’ve sold 40 apps.

“We don’t know (the) 40 people who bought them, so it’s not like just all our friends,” Bolinger says.

But Bolinger expects sales to take off much faster once a free version of the game is approved.

The free versions of various applications have limited playability, but they allow people the chance to decide whether they want to make the purchases.

There are some issues with the free version’s marketing text, which is holding up the process, Bolinger says.

He and Taylor remain confident, though. They’ve formed a company called Wild Bamboo Rocket to create more apps.

Bolinger likens their business to bamboo, which takes a long time to establish a root base but then takes off.

They’ve spent five years building a foundation for Wild Bamboo.

“Now that we have,” Bolinger says, “we hope it just takes off.”

Being as easily distracted as I am, I immediately grabbed my iphone and headed to the app store and bought it! Hoping it will assist me in my efforts to stave off alzheimer’s. Such a simple concept and not so easy to do. But now I really have to get some actual work done!

  • Carrie Rengers

Hey, Easily Distracted. Cool. Was it fun?

  • easilydistracted

yes fun and frustrating because it was not easy. I’m about to practce some more right now!

  • gdboling

@easilydistracted – I’m glad you like it. Please leave a review for the app in itunes if you get a chance and please tell us if you have any issues and/or want to see some improvements made. TrainBeaser’s success relies in part by feedback from players.

@Carrie – Thanks for writing up an article on us!

  • ksmqsp

Awesome!!! Ouy of how many thousand apps that are available, you write about 1 from here? Must be a slooooow news day. No wonder newspapers are going under.

  • Carrie Rengers

Really, Ksmqsp? I don’t even have an iPhone, and I thought it was cool.

Of course, that’s why I try to write a variety of items every day. Not everyone is interested in the same things.

    Thanks,

    Carrie

  • ksmqsp

Thats why you’ll out of job soon. I love that you alos read your own message board. A little sensitive dont you think?

  • Carrie Rengers

Nope, Ksmqsp, that’s actually part of my job. We want our blogs to be interactive. If someone has a question for me or wonders why I’ve written about something, I’m happy to respond. Even if comments are less than kind.

    Sincerely,

    Carrie

  • ozhawk

Ksmqsp, Carrie’s blog is about things happening in WICHITA and a local business creating something that is picked up by an international company for a super-product like iPhone is not only INTERESTING, but it’s GOOD NEWS.

I for one appreciate it. If you don’t like Carrie’s blog, don’t read it. If you are offended by what she has to say back to you, then perhaps you should think about the tone of your messages to/about her.

    P.S.
    Newsflash! Reporters are people too.

  • ksmqsp

Whats your next article going to be? Steve Jobs flew over Wichita once? As for Ozhawk, how the hell is one out of a thousand apps that no one(except people from wichita) will buy news?

  • blueyes

Sounds like ksmqsp needs to eat his bran today.

  • Carrie Rengers

    Hey, Ozhawk and Blueyes –

I really appreciate the support. I don’t mind people disagreeing with me or what I write (my husband does it regularly!), but sometimes the ugly tones are upsetting. And I feel for the people I write about who get bashed, too.

    Thanks again,

    Carrie

  • ksmqsp

Eat my brain? Wow, took you all day to come up with that? Pretty clever. And Carrie, instead of worrying about what people say about you, maybe you should focus on reporting actual news. Like I said earlier, idiot hack writters, like yourself, are the reason the newspaper industry is in trouble. Take the buyout when they offer it.

  • Carrie Rengers

Just wondering, Ksmqsp, if I’m that bad, why do you keep reading me?

  • AFN

Wow! Ok, first of all ksmqsp, blueyes wrote BRAN not BRAIN. I’m assuming that they had the same thought I did when reading your comments and assumed you must be constipated or something to cause you to be so darn grumpy. Second of all, what is your deal? If you don’t like it, don’t read it. There’s having and voicing your opinion and then there’s just being plan mean – you’re the second option. You got it out the first time then continued to attack – there’s no call for that.

  • Carrie Rengers

Hey, thanks AFN. It took me a minute to figure out who the heck would have said, “Eat my brain.” But then it all made sense. Hah!

It always cracks me up when people write to criticize me, and their copy is riddled with errors.

  • shrnrbrts12

A friend of mine who is the mother of one of the designers of this app. sent a link to me. I have read the comments & I registered just to put in my 2-cents worth to ksmqsp’s brainless dither today. My response is ‘get a life’! I don’t even live in Kansas & I’m interested in Carrie’s blog. So there!

  • Carrie Rengers

Really appreciate it, Shrnrbrts12. Please keep reading!

  • ksmqsp

I dont read you, I saw that ridiculous article on the front page and had to respond. Its so small town Kansas. Its nice to know that your family registered to support you. It wont be for long however. You’ll be wrtting for the East high paper next, if they’ll take you that is. I’m done responding to your ignorance. Learn to take critizism, you’ll get much further in life.

  • easilydistracted

We can only hope that ksmqsp is done responding.

  • Carrie Rengers

I agree, Easily Distracted. If he’s not, I’ll just start deleting him. Oh, the power! ;)

  • easilydistracted

I’ve been racking my brain to figure out the acronym!

  • Carrie Rengers

You should not give him that much thought! However, I did a Google search and found he did some poorly spelled mini movie reviews.

  • easilydistracted

Okay, back the original topic. I have been playing TrainBeaser and I suck at it! But last night I actually got through a whole round. For those who are unfamiliar, the screen shows a right or left image and the “game” is that the player has to press the button that is the OPPOSITE of the image shown. The playing screen is a grid, and the image shown moves around the grid. You have 1 second (and that’s the slow speed) to shift your gaze to the new location, determine its directionality, and press the button that is the opposite direction. !!! I need lots more practice!
