Monica’s bundt cakes land in Dillons

monica2

Monica Schlegel has been looking for new ways to sell her Monica’s Bundt Cakes.

“I’m here to grow,” she says.

Schlegel says she thought if she could get into Dillons stores, it would be a way to expand without having to build new stores herself.

“We put a lot of thought into it and put together a nice presentation for Dillons,” she says. “I thought . . . I’d really have to push for it.”

Instead, she says, “Thankfully . . . the people in Hutchinson were already familiar with our cakes. They were just more than willing to have our products.”

Schlegel, whose store opened at 1328 E. Douglas in 2005, will begin selling her individual-sized bundt cakes — the bundtlettes — Thursday in Wichita Dillons stores at Central and Rock, 21st and Maize, Maize and Central and 37th and Woodlawn. They’ll also be in Dillons stores in Andover and Derby.

There’s a chance Schlegel can sell more of her items at Dillons in the future, too.

“What more could I ask for?” she says. “This is just wonderful.”

You don’t say, Small Business style

When I go to events like today’s 2009 Small Business Awards luncheon, I always keep an ear out for a quote of the day (my You Don’t Say feature).

Today, I had three favorite quotes.

Shocker Coach Gregg Marshall was the keynote speaker, and he talked about leadership and explained how he spent years as an assistant coach.

When he made the move to head coach, he said, “I can not describe to you the difference having just moved over 18 inches on that bench.” gregg

And on Wichita’s friendliness, which Marshall likened to Southern hospitality, he said, “I don’t know exactly what you call it here, but it’s genuine and real.”

My favorite quote of the day came from Stu Lungwitz, whose family’s Print Source won business of the year for companies of 26 to 100 employees.

There’s an expression Lungwitz promised employees he’d say if Print Source actually won, so he was stuck exclaiming it in front of about 275 business people.

“I’m a man of my word,” Lungwitz said, “so I just have to say, Yabba-dabba-doo!”

Part two: That’s my mom

So my mother read my previous blog post and left a voicemail for me to express her concern about whether I was allowed to use the cartoon and whether it needs further attribution.

First, mother . . . yes, I checked. Nick Jungman, our online editor, says we’re using the embed code (blog talk here) that the syndicate provides, meaning it wants its cartoons to circulate.

Second, Nick says, “I’m glad she’s so copyright conscientious.”

Please, mom . . .

Part of the point of this blog is to reach people who aren’t traditional newspaper subscribers.

While some people read the hard copy and online, others are firmly entrenched in one camp or the other.

My mother is clearly a newspaper-only kind of gal. Today, she e-mailed me the cartoon below with the words, “So true, so true.”

While my mother has always been the biggest supporter of my career, I might caution her that she shouldn’t throw stones at someone who blogs five days a week!

KCTU to convert to digital

KCTU, Channel 5, is making the transition to digital late this month and adding several new channels. But none of them will be in high definition.

News and creative director R.J. Dickens says that’s because HD allows for only two channels within a frequency while digital can easily accommodate at least four, which is what KCTU plans.

“From a business standpoint, do you really give up two revenue streams so some no-life loser techno geek can count all the pores in your face?” Dickens says.

After the conversion, KCTU will be on Channel 43.

Channel 43.1 will have the station’s traditional format, which includes local programming. It will also have some new nationally syndicated programming.

Channel 43.2 will be sports related, with a lot of games from area high schools and colleges.

Channel 43.3 will be movies and international programming. Dickens says he’s talking with two or three potential providers.

And there are several options for Channel 43.4, which Dickens isn’t ready to talk about yet.

The conversion should happen by Memorial Day weekend.
