The Wichita area is getting its second Smashburger restaurant, but it won’t actually be in Wichita.
Derby — more precisely 1220 N. Rock in Derby — will be the new location.
“There is a method to the madness,” says Smashburger spokeswoman Jennifer Miller.
She says the chain, owned by Denver-based Consumer Capital Partners, likes the demographics and traffic counts in Derby.
“Derby seems to be growing,” Miller says. “Our president (Scott Crane) is a former Wichitan, so he knew the area pretty well.”
“I think it’s underserved,” Crane says of Derby. And he thinks the restaurants that are there have high volumes.
Local partners in the Wichita-based Smashburgers are Lindy Andeel and Al Caro.
The first Wichita-area Smashburger opened in December near 35th and Woodlawn. It had the second-best opening of any of the 12 restaurants in the growing chain.
“It’s just been very well received,” Crane says.
The chain has stores in Colorado and Texas and is adding new stores in Colorado, Minnesota and Oklahoma.
Crane says he’s close to a deal in the 21st or 25th and Maize area. He doesn’t want to be more specific yet.
He says his group is looking to add more Wichita Smashburgers and is eyeing Hutchinson and Salina as well.
The Derby location will open in late May.
