Cort Anderson photographs Greensburg from Southern Plains Co-op elevator.
Cort Anderson and I got up early today to head to Greensburg so he could photograph progress in the community after a year. He took the shots from the top of the Southern Plains Co-op.
I stayed below to take photos of him taking photos. I felt safer on the ground. Besides, I didn’t have the necessary releases and liability insurance to go up.
We had planned on leaving around 6 when Cort’s alarm went off. He didn’t need an alarm. His air mattress slowly deflated during the night, so he was up and working when I woke up.
His shots are great, even a little better than he expected. He commented that there had been a lot of building the past year. Cort was here right after the tornado in May 2007 to take photos for the state press association, and he’s been back several times since.

A wide view looking south from top of the grain elevator.
Les Anderson is a professor in the Elliott School of Communication at Wichita State University. This is his second year of bringing journalism students to Greensburg to tell the story of its rebirth.
