Longwell to announce bid for reelection



Vice Mayor Jeff Longwell plans to formally announce his bid for reelection as District 5 City Council member tonight. The event is at 5:30 p.m. at Avivo Brick Oven Pizzaria in New Market Square. Longwell said several state lawmakers who live in his northwest Wichita district plan to attend.

Longwell said he plans to use his campaign to talk about some of the transportation and flood-reduction projects initiated during his first term and some of the ways Wichita and Sedgwick County could consolidate some services in the next few years, such as law enforcement and environmental services. There are too many redundant processes, Wichita has the majority of the population of Sedgwick County and consolidation could bring more efficient services to everyone, he said.

O’Neal re-elected as House Speaker; House leadership votes continue


TOPEKA – Members of the House of Representatives are choosing their leaders for the next two years today.

House Speaker Mike O’Neal was re-elected for another two years on a unanimous voice vote. The Hutchinson Republican ran unopposed.

House Republicans are currently (at noon) tallying the votes in a five-way race for Speaker Pro Tem between representatives Anthony Brown of Eudora, Larry Powell of Garden City, Jene Vickrey of Louisburg, Virgil Peck of Tyro and Scott Schwab of Olathe.
