UPDATE, Nov. 22: Bob Weeks says thanks for asking, but Four Loko’s not his style. Click here for his blog post.
Our good friend and fellow blogger Bob Weeks at Voice For Liberty in Wichita is taking up the cause of Four Loko, the punch-flavored alcohol drink that is getting drained of its caffeine kick after four states and the federal government declared it an unsafe product.
Last call for Irish coffee? I’ve always thought that Irish coffee was the perfect food, providing four essential nutrients in one tasty beverage: alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and fat. But this beverage may soon be banned. A U.S. Food and Drug Administration news release states: “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today warned four companies that the caffeine added to their malt alcoholic beverages is an ‘unsafe food additive’ and said that further action, including seizure of their products, is possible under federal law.” Coffee isn’t a “malt beverage,” I don’t believe, but what’s to stop the FDA from extending this prohibition?
I stand ready to help your defense of liberty against the encroachments of the nanny state. I happen to have, on my desk, a full, unopened can of vintage, fully caffeinated Four Loko cranberry-lemonade beverage that I bought as a photo prop for the story I wrote on the controversy.
I propose that we ( “we” meaning “you” in this instance) shotgun this tallboy and see what happens.
Then we (in this instance. “we” meaning “I”) can record the results for both of our blogs.
As you point out, there is little difference between this and adding a wee nip of holiday cheer to a cuppa joe.
The can on my desk contains no more alcohol than an average bottle of wine and the caffeine of only three cups of coffee.
I would say the risk to us (“us” meaning “me” in this instance) is minimal.
There’s little evidence it’s harmful, once you set aside the nine Washington college students who were hospitalized and the 19-year-old Michigan lad who had a heart attack after drinking it.
At best, we (“we” meaning “you” in this instance) could prove this drink to be harmless. At worst, we (meaning both of us in this instance) would get a ton of web hits.
My original plan was to dump out the Four Loko and make a desk lamp out of the really cool-looking can.
But I’m willing to share if it will advance the causes of science and liberty.
Let me know,
Yours, as always,
