Democratic Senate candidates debate tonight in Wichita

vote 2010 headerFour Democratic candidates in the primary race for the U.S. Senate in Kansas will take part in a live televised debate at 6:30 tonight on KWCH, Channel 12.

Those participating in the 30-minute debate are state Sen. David Haley, of Kansas City; Baker University assistant dean Lisa Johnston, of Overland Park; communications executive Charles Schollenberger, of Prairie Village; and attorney and accountant Patrick Wiesner, Lawrence.

Candidate Bob Conroy, a retired railroad engineer from Shawnee, has told the TV station he will not participate.

Republican candidates in the race debated last week on KWCH.

The primary election is Aug. 3.

City poised for next step on 200-acre lake on Kingsbury Tract

water skiThe slowdown in construction might delay the completion of the proposed 215-acre lake at the future Kingsbury Park northeast of K-96 and Hoover Road, City Parks Director Doug Kupper said this morning. But Kupper said the city hopes that enough of the lake will be completed in roughly five years to open a swimming and recreation area. Wichita City Council members will vote Tuesday on a $250,000 contract to design the lake’s depths, shoreline, bridge locations and other details. If approved, RDG Planning and Design and Cook Flatt and Strobel and Applied Ecological Services will team up and decide how steep to grade the lake bottom in swimming areas and where to set up the mechanical system that will tow water skiers around part of the lake.
