Wichita hoping to find stimulus aid for Woodlawn, 13th Street projects

The Wichita City Council voted today to seek about $920,000 in federal funds for street repairs on Woodlawn Boulevard and 13th Street North.

The street projects were part of the city’s original application for funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the economic stimulus measure passed by Congress and signed by President Obama last year to try to improve the nation’s flagging economy.

The new projects would include asphalt resurfacing and some concrete work on Woodlawn between Lincoln and Harry and on 13th between Maize to Tyler, according to a report from the Public Works Department.

“These two projects did not receive 2009 ARRA funding, but have been through the Kansas Department of Transportation clearance and approval process, thus should be at or near the top of the list to receive ARRA funding in 2010, if and when a new program is approved,” the report said.

As proposed, the 13th Street project would cost about $638,000 — $561,000 from the federal government and $77,000 in city matching funds.

The Woodlawn project would cost $281,000 — $248,000 in federal money and $33,000 in city funds.

Last year, the city received federal assistance for street improvement projects on Hillside, Broadway, Maize and Hydraulic.
