MSNBC ‘Countdown’ host Olbermann disses Lawrence Dumont Stadium parking lot

2.2

In mocking the anti-tax “tea party” movement, MSNBC “Countdown” host Keith Olbermann smeared the parking lot at Lawrence Dumont Stadium, where the “Tea Party Express” bus tour is scheduled to make a stop Nov. 4.

This from Olbermann’s Wednesday night broadcast:

“Tea Party Express II launches this weekend, coming to 38 cities according to its press release; 37 on their Web site — Oh well.

“Previous tea parties so successful they now have to hold them in such venues as Wichita’s Lawrence Dumont Stadium (pause) parking lot.”

Note to Mr. Olbermann:

Keith,

As a national sports broadcaster, you should be aware that the parking lot at Lawrence Dumont Stadium — home of the mighty Wichita Wingnuts — is one of the premier parking venues in unaffiliated minor league baseball.

It’s paved and striped and even has lights to help you find your car at night.

With the stadium’s narrow concourses and incessant wind, the LD parking lot is one of the finest places in America to shag foul balls.

In fact, we like it so well that we’re going to park there and shuttle to our new $205 million arena nearly a mile away.

Admittedly, we may be a bit backward out here in flyover country. When the need arises to park a bus, we usually do that in a parking lot.

Where do you put buses in Rockefeller Center?

Note to Dion, Olbermann didn’t just single out the parking lot, he mocked a lot of the absurd locations the teabaggers were meeting. Olbermann was mocking the teabaggers absurd locations for venues, not the stadium.

Claiming to be a huge movement you’d think the teabaggers would be holding the event in the stadium. Afterall, they were just claiming a million protesters in D.C. (although it was about 10,000). So Olbermann mocked their quick downfall as this overhyped movement.

Why not reference the whole point of Olbermann’s message rather than quote mining and taking the entire rant out of context. That sort of thing might fly on Fox News but not a real news organization.

I was once at a forum about careers in public service, held on the East Coast.

Person from EPA was there. She talked about lots of cool places you could work for EPA but said, “avoid District Five.”

Expecting the answer, but too curious to refrain I asked in the Q&A “why avoid District Five?”

She looked at me disdainfully, “It’s in Kansas.”

My only point: the folks on the coasts don’t seem to think much of us here in the rectangular states. Can’t say that really bothers me.

But the folks from here who vote to send more of our cash and decision-making to the coasts should reconsider that.

THIS is now the featured story on the Eagle Website? Can we look more backward?

As Maggotpunk said, the point was that the Teabaggers were meeting in a PARKING LOT fo a stadium, rather than the stadium. No insult to the PARKING LOT of Lawrence Dumont Stadium was implied, the joke would have worked for any venue involving a stadium…and a parking lot.

The so called “tea party” grass movements is anything other than that. Funded by FreedomWorks which is headed by former Republican Senator Dick Armey who led the 1994 attack on health car reform and who happens to head a lobby firm for the health care industry and who hypocritically has been on “government run health care” since he was a young college professor. The other funding group for the tea parties is Americans For Prosperity head by Tim Phillips a highly paid Republican operative and lobbyist. The slick bus with the red hand on it..ie “keep you hands off my health care” was funded by David Koch along with the hot air balloon…”global warming is hot air”….convenient for Mr. Koch who has gotten rich from the oil and chemical industry.

They are just 1 more group of hypocrites in a nation om a planet that already had too many groups of hypocrites. SIGH

What scares me is that people are still falling all over him, and more than that – the only war he seems to have the courage to fight is the one with Fox, and they are kicking his ass left and right , so to speak, every single day from what the ratings say.

“Olbermann is a hack. He couldn’t cut it on ESPN, he had to join one of the junior networks to get a job.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Talk about a truly jaw droppingly dumb example of the “say anything I want to believe without regard to reality” Frankfurtian bullsh*t variety. Olbermann was one of the most recognizable and marketed faces on ESPN during his time there. This is true regardless of what one thinks of his commentary or his politics.

And point of reality: Those who are snarking about Olbermann’s ratings fail to understand the nature of the market. The vast majority of the politically obsessed in this country (those who spend their evenings watching political commentary shows rather than entertainment programming) are self identified conservatives. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that faux news has cornered the lion’s share of the market, given the nature of that market. The point is, however, is that faux has cornered the right wing nut market, and that is where the numbers are. So, realizing this, MSNBC has counterprogrammed with Olbermann and Maddow, and it has paid off for them. MSNBC’s ratings have improved and they outdraw CNN in those time slots, which is a good outcome for MSNBC.

“to agnatha – why do you care so much about MSNBC or CNN or NBC, or Fox news for that matter? “

A dumb rhetorical question. I was responding to snark from such posters as drive by troll number 2 (a.k.a. Anti) as to Olbermann’s poor ratings. If one understands the market, one understands that Olbermann’s ratings are not poor, which is why MSNBC’s ratings are better than CNN’s, because the primetime cable news network market is for those whose political obssessiveness outweighs the attraction of the entertainment programming most people watch. “How I Met Your Mother” kicks the @ss of both O’Reilly and Olbermann.

“Saying Fox news is conservative is just admitting that the others are liberal.”

Uhm, no. The exclusionary principle does not apply to news networks. Not conservative does not equal liberal (and not liberal does not equal conservative). The Big Three Networks, CNN, established wire services, PBS, the BBC, etc. strive to be objective, which means avoiding either conservative or liberal slants.

Yes, MSNBC nights has a very definite “liberal” slant because they are marketing to self identified liberals (and also anti-conservatives, which are not necessarily the same thing), and their ratings have improved because of it. MSNBC’s ratings improved at the expense of CNN’s, however, but not faux’s, because MSNBC’s and CNN’s viewership are those who, by definition, are not interested in a conservative slant in the news (otherwise, they would already be watching faux, and their ratings would be even higher). But, since those who watch cable news networks duing entertainment hours are mostly the politically obsessed, a high proportion of those viewers who will not be intereted in watching faux will be interested in a network that counterprograms against them, and MSNBC got the jump on that market. It is in fact because of their liberal slant that they now get better ratings than CNN.

    Oh yeah… lunch with anchors:

    TUESDAY, FEB 24

President Barack Obama met with 10 members of the press today over lunch at the White House — two from each network. The guest list consisted of ABC’s Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos, CBS’ Katie Couric and Bob Schieffer, NBC’s Brian Williams and David Gregory, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer and John King and Fox News Channel’s Bret Baier and Chris Wallace.

Speaking of faux (cough, excuse me, Fox) Spews (…er…News):

“That Rupert Murdoch may skew the news rightward more for commercial than ideological reasons is somewhat beside the point. What matters is the way that Fox’s successful model has invaded the bloodstream of the American media. By showing that ideologically distorted news can drive ratings, Ailes has provoked his rivals at CNN and MSNBC to experiment with a variety of populist and ideological takes on the news. It’s Fox that led CNN’s Lou Dobbs to remodel himself into a nativist cartoon. It’s Fox that led MSNBC to amp up Keith Olbermann. Fox hasn’t just corrupted its own coverage. Through its influence, it has made all of cable news unpleasant and unreliable.

(Note: I wouldn’t go that far, but the man has a definite point)

“What’s most distinctive about the American press is not its freedom but its tradition of independence—that it serves the public interest rather than those of parties, persuasions, or pressure groups. Media independence is a 20th-century innovation that has never fully taken root in Europe or many other countries that do have free press. The Australian-British-continental model of politicized media that Murdoch has implemented at Fox is un-American, so much so that he has little choice but go on denying what he’s doing as he does it. For Murdoch, Ailes, and company, ‘fair and balanced’ is a necessary lie. To admit that their coverage is slanted by design would violate the American understanding of the media’s role in democracy and our idea of what constitutes journalistic fair play. But it’s a demonstrable deceit that no longer deserves equal time.”

Except that I do think the reporting on CNN (so does the public, I suspect, which is why their ratings went up during the 2008 election when politics actually competed with entertainment media) has been solid, this guy has nailed the dismount.
