Commissioners set mill levy at existing rate — for now

In a move that’s purely legal and likely not what Sedgwick County commissioners ultimately will pass, the board this morning voted to keep the county’s mill levy the same as it was last year — roughly 30 mills.

Under state law, by today’s decision, the county can’t raise the mill levy beyond that level but can — and likely will — make it lower.

If our county commissioners cared anything about the people they represent, they would now be cutting the mill rate. Don’t they know that people are suffering. One wonders if they have even heard of the layoffs in the aviation industry. The commissioners should be striving to help people through these hard-times by cutting to bone expenses and reducing the mill rate to its lowest possible level. However, one suspects that they are more concerned with lining their pockets and those of their cronies.

Cutting the mill levy will do nothing to help people truly suffering. An extra $5 to $15 per year is what it amounts to per household, and in turn it means extensive budget cuts, which means more layoffs. How is that going to help Sedgwick County residents? I just hope the council uses some common sense and doesn’t do what looks best politically.

    Calvin,

How about you suggest what services you would cut from the county budget so you can get $15 in your pocket next year? Then you can hear from everyone else why they would rather keep the services you don’t want, and cut some that you probably feel are necessary.

If you don’t have the information to come up with a better alternative, then you shouldn’t jump into the fray.

This commission seems to be having meetings outside of the board room, trying to remove an administrator to devert the fact that the commission does not want to make decisions but point the finger at someone else.

Sounds like Obama all over again and again.

Government bureaucrats have the idea that an extra 5 or 15 dollars means nothing to the average Joe. Why the average Joe will not miss it; it is just pocket change. Besides the bureaucrats can use it better as they strive to make for us a better world. That the kind of thinking that has got us into this mess. Personally, I could use that extra 5 or 15 dollars in my pocket–and I am sure that is true for many other folks out there.
