Gov. Parkinson joins the blogosphere

TOPEKA – “Welcome to my first actual blog,” wrote Gov. Mark Parkinson yesterday.

In the post Parkinson, a Democrat, said he decided to start blogging when he became governor at the end of April “to provide you a glimpse of what it is like to serve as Governor and to give insight into what happens in our office every day.”

The blog comes up with the governor’s website.

In the mostly biographical initial offer Parkinson promised he’d be the one writing the posts, “this isn’t something that a staffer is writing to try to make me look good.”

He also promised he, and other posters, would try not to be boring or politically correct and “we’ll try not to use political speak (lots of words that say nothing, but sound good).”

Sorry, Governor Parkinson: So far, you are NOT blogging … you are giving a one-way or unilateral speech.

A “blog” implies a two-way conversation. After you present your thoughts about Kansas and/or other topics, other bloggers should be able to respond to your comments. It does put you in a hot seat because you must face all challengers, many of whom blog anonymously.

You also have to know how to spell and how to string together words to make meaningful sentences. I assume you learned this back in your high school days at Wichita Heights H.S. or in your college days. Good idea to have a dictionary handy.

Of course, you are not the first Kansas politician to blog. Several Kansas politicians have commented on the Wichita Eagle Blog (WE Blog), sometimes anonymously, sometimes using their real name.

But, Governor Parkinson, welcome to the big wide world of blogging. Will be interesting to see how it works out.
