Sedgwick County commissioners meet at 9 a.m. every Tuesday with department heads and other staff. It’s a time for the elected officials to interact with employees who carry out the county’s services. Today’s meeting got cut off at 9:15 a.m. so commissioners could walk across the street and attend a reception for outgoing city council member Sharon Fearey.
Commissioners planned to talk about open meetings laws and “serial” communications and meetings. Open meetings laws require public notice whenever more than two commissioners meet at a time. To get around that in Kansas, elected officials sometimes meet one-on-one, in a row — what those in the know call “serial” meetings.
The board said it would reconvene at 10:30 a.m., but the reception was taking longer than expected. So the board canceled its open meeting to talk about closed meetings.
Several department heads had rushed back to the third floor of the courthouse at 10:30 a.m. to meet with commissioners, only to be told the meeting was off.
Look for a meeting on meetings to take place at the commission’s staff gathering at 9 a.m. April 21.
