Some Sedgwick County officials wanting to take a break during their retreat Wednesday had a hard time getting out of a conference room at Fire District #1′s station near Wild West World. The door wouldn’t budge.
Although there was an alternate route out, the irony of the potential fire hazard wasn’t lost on meeting-goers.
“This is embarrassing,” Chief Tim Millspaugh told a reporter after the meeting.
He said the meeting space is a tornado-proof room used for training classes and is open for public use. The door’s latch is different than others because the room is tornado-safe, he said.
Millspaugh said he has taken the latch off several times but hasn’t been able to get it fixed.
He said Wednesday he planned to give it another shot.
