Some changes in the newsroom

You may have seen an item in the paper recently explaining that Managing Editor Theresa Johnson is leaving The Eagle. Today is Theresa’s last day with us, and she begins work next week in the communications department at Koch Industries.

As the editor in charge of day-to-day newsroom operations, Theresa was often the contact person for readers or news sources. Starting Monday, two Eagle editors will take on Theresa’s duties while I decide whether to hire a new managing editor or structure the editing team in some other way.

Tom Shine is a longtime editor at The Eagle in sports, metro news and now business coverage. He’ll share responsibility for the daily news report with Jean Hays, our metro editor. The two of them will oversee news assignments and coverage for the printed newspaper and Kansas.com, our Web site. You can reach Tom at tshine@wichitaeagle.com or 268-6268 or Jean at jhays@wichitaeagle.com or 268-6557.

Some responsibilities of key senior staff members won’t change, but at least for now, they’ll report to me instead of Theresa. Arlice Davenport is in charge of the design and graphics staff of the newsroom. Michael Roehrman oversees our newsroom at night, and is responsible for headlines and copy editing. And Nick Jungman is in charge of Kansas.com.

In the coming weeks, I expect to have many conversations with newsroom departments and employees as I figure out the best way to align our management team. In the meantime, all of the senior editors I named, in addition to Sports Editor Kirk Seminoff and Features Editor Lori Linenberger, will take on greater decision-making responsibility in their departments. All of these folks are very experienced and intelligent journalists, and when the newspaper is in their hands…. it’s in good hands.

    Hey Sherry:

Why does the Eagle continue to refuse to investigate the civil rights scandal involving Sedgwick County Judges Pilshaw & Fleetwood and prosecutor Christine Ladner conspiring to file unsubstantiated felony arrest warrants over a 8 year period against a disabled air force veteran from Iowa with a broken neck to take away his disability pension, veteran benefits and ability to receive treatment at a veteran hospital? The scandal also resulted in the veteran’s 13 year old son being improperly incarcerated for 2 years because Judge Henderson, the juvenile prosecutors and the boy’s court appointed attorney, Mark Kahrs allowing a false name for the father to be put on the court records so that the out of state father was not contacted before the boy was imprisoned for two years.

Teresa Johnson sat on this story for 6 months (at Lou’s command in my opinion). Sherry Chisenhall has had all of the documentation for one month, but refuses to let her reporters cover it. I circulated a motion around the Sedgwick County Courthouse last Monday about 4 cases of outrageous illegal actions by judges & attorneys that the Eagle refuses to investigate. I hope my activities sped up the departure of Lou Heldman & Teresa Johnson. To encourage Sherry to leave I guess I’ll have to continue to report the story by e-mail to all of the Eagle reporters and court personnel.

Even if the Eagle editors are incompetent & afraid, I truly appreciate the Eagle respecting citizens’ rights to free speech.
Does any one want to call Joe? I have his telephone number and copies of his documents.

Lyrics to Ozzy Osbourne song Suicide Solution mentioned in your article follows. What parent would want his kid listening to these???

    SUICIDE SOLUTION (Ozzy Osbourne)

Wine is fine but whiskeys quicker
    Suicide is slow with liquor
Take a bottle and drown your sorrows
    Then it floods away tomorrows

    Evil thoughts and evil doings
Cold, alone you hang in ruins
Thought that youd escape the reaper
You cant escape the master keeper

cause you feel like youre living a lie
Such a shame whos to blame and youre wondering why
Then you ask from your cask us there life after birth
What you sow can mean hell on this earth

Now you live inside a bottle
The reapers traveling at full throttle
Its catching you but you dont see
The reaper is you and the reaper is me

    Breaking laws, knocking doors
But theres no one at home
Made your bed, rest your head
But you lie there and moan
Where to hide, suicide is the only way out
Dont you know what its really about
