Smoking ads

A reader sent the Eagle an e-mail today to express shock upon seeing a cigarette advertisement on the back page of our GO! entertainment section. She asked whether the Eagle routinely accepts cigarette ads, noting that in the two years she’s lived here she couldn’t ever recall seeing one.
She’s right that cigarette ads aren’t often in the Eagle. But, according to Eagle advertising manager Lisa Fetter, the paper doesn’t have a policy against accepting them. Lisa said the Eagle’s philosophy is to place such ads in sections where they make the most sense. The GO! section, she noted, contains entertainment information for weekend activities, including nightclubs.
She’s not sure how long the ad will appear in The Eagle, but she didn’t think it
would be too long, saying, "It’s rare that we even have cigarette ads
anymore."

I don’t see a problem here. Booze makers advertise their stink on every magazine, tv, radio, and billboard.
When was the last time someone had a smoke and beat the crap out of their spouse, go to a bar and get into a fight, go shoot up a bar?
When was the last time a smoker wiped out a whole family on Christmas day in his car?

I’m not saying smoking is healthy. But we really need to cut down on allowing people over and over getting away with Drinking and driving!!

The TV ads make it look like if you drink their product, you will hook up with a model!! I guess it isn’t false advertising, because if you drink enough, even a baboon looks like a 10!!

I get tired of smokers getting all the anger and hostility of society. Always being told how much smokers cost others. How about how much drunk drivers cost others, and alcohol related diseases?? How about how much unhealthy foods cost others, in terms of obesity, and fatty conditions, and even heart attack and stroke.. Why should smokers shoulder all the blame for all of society’s ills??

I think all the hoopla surrounding smoking has gotten out of hand. The way some people make it sound, you’d think cigarettes were actually a mixture of crack, meth, and lots of booze. I mean, come on….unless you are a total friggin idiot, can you REALLY convince yourself that smoking is good for you?? I think everyone knows about cigarettes, so let’s lay off the hysterical posturing. Let’s stop the nanny politics of our goverments, and make them get back to what they are supposed to be doing…RUNNING OUR GOVERNMENT. I think that 99% of us, whether we are smokers or not, have come into contact with cigarette smoke at some point in our life, and none the worse the wear. I’m just TIRED of all of this

Amen Elizabeth. Can we find a new whipping boy already? If a smoker is conscientious about their habit in terms of smoking outside and away from doors, get off their backs!
