Thanks for dropping in to check out The Editor’s Desk. Truthfully, though, we want this blog to be more like a round-table. Or take out the furniture completely, and let’s talk over something of a digital coffee pot.
The Editor’s Desk is a new blog by the senior editors of The Wichita Eagle. We wanted to find a way to talk with readers on a daily basis — to hear your questions and comments, and to talk about the decisions we make every day at The Eagle. Hundreds of decisions every day go into shaping your newspaper, and we want to know when you do and don’t agree, or when you simply have a comment on the news of the day.
Every day, we find ourselves writing an e-mail back to a reader to answer a question. Or returning a phone call to explain why a story was played the way it was, or why we wrote a headline a certain way. That one-to-one communication is great, and it’s (usually) one of the best parts of my day.
But over the years, it’s often struck me that I’m able to answer that question for that one reader, when perhaps dozens of other readers had the same question.
We hope this blog gives us a better two-way street to hear from and talk with readers. Please make this spot a regular stop on your Internet rounds, and join in the conversation.

So, when are you going to stop putting values boy on the editorial page and start putting him on the church page?
KFG -
Castillo is in the Faith and Values section each and every Saturday – as well as the editorial page whenever he writes an editorial.
Editors:
I have wondered if Mr. Castilio’s editorials are much different from the talking points on the RNC website. It is not so much that I disagree with his positions, which I do, but instead my complaint is that what chooses to write about is pretty redundant, not well presented, or thought out.
Needless to say, I am not a fan. I did consider cancelling my paper subscription to voice my protest in a more tangible way, but haven’t done that yet.
I am sure that there are people who have the oppostie view that I have. I appreciate the opportunity to voice my opinion that this blog provides. Thank you.
Steven, that is my point exactly. If they refuse to remove this joke of a writer, why not have someone on the same page for balance?
And why pander to one values group over another? Tyranny of the majority?
And I thought these SENIOR editors were going to answer back! Silly me…
Steven and KFG,
Brent’s columns are published on the opinion pages, which are separate from the newsroom. As editor, I do not oversee content of those pages — Phillip Brownlee is the opinion page editor, and reports directly to the publisher, not to an editor in the newsroom.
If you have questions about the content of those pages, it would be more appropriately discussed on the WE blog site, http://blogs.kansas.com/weblog/.
Thanks.
I find it rather amazing that KFG and Steven find Brent C’s opinions so offensive.
Apparently one, local, conservative opinion in the WE is one too many, particularly since conservatives view Brownlee, Holman, Scholfield and Crowson as parrots for the DNC and among Sebelius’ greatest admirers.
From now until November we anticipate their thinly veiled, pro-Sebelius endorsements disguised as editorials about Barnett’s lack of experience or his lack of a warchest or his inability to unite the party or why his plans won’t work or blah, blah, blah ad nauseum. Just keep reading.
Thanks for your suggestion, Sherry. We have appropriately, and at times inappropriately, expressed our views about Mr. Costilio’s writing on the the blog you link. I have yet to contact Mr. Brownlee directly; that may be a good idea, too.
