On the Border offering $1 margaritas on Saturday

This is my kind of week.

Tuesday, apparently, was National Drink Wine Day. (I tend not to celebrate that one, though, because EVERY DAY is National Drink Wine Day at my house.)

And Saturday is National Margarita Day. Now that one I can celebrate.

Mexican chain On the Border, which has Wichita locations at 1930 N. Rock Road and 2347 N. Maize Road, will observe the day by offering $1 house margaritas all day. Customers can order the 12 oz. house margaritas either frozen or on the rocks, and the restaurants also will offer their CoronaRitas, which are dramatically served with a beer turned upside down inside of them, for $5.

When I do go to On the Border, I’m usually lured by the restaurant’s giant frozen swirl margaritas served in glass that reminds me of a fish bowl, and I’ve also been known to visit Jose Pepper’s and Ziggy’s Pizza on its discount margarita nights. Don’t even get me started on those Carlos O’ Kelly’s margaritas in a plastic yellow cup that always tempts me at Intrust Bank Arena concerts.

Who has Wichita’s best margarita, in your opinion?

Ziggy’s Pizza adding more dining space

Ziggy's Pizza will almost double its dining capacity with this addition.

Ziggy’s Pizza, one of my most favorite pizza places in Wichita, is about to get roomier.  The notoriously tiny restaurant in Clifton Square, 3700 E. Douglas, soon will almost double its indoor dining space.

The restaurant is in the midst of expanding to an empty space to its north, which will give it the ability to add 30 seats and accommodate large groups — something it hasn’t been able to do since opening in February.

The work should be done in another month or so, owners say.

Question of the week: Best non-delivery pizza?

My people and me at Picasso's last weekend. Can't get enough of that place.

I reviewed Ziggy’s a few weeks ago, and I’ve got the scoop on Picasso’s slices today. I have PIZZA ON THE BRAIN.

We’ve had a nice influx of new pizza places lately in Wichita, which inspires today’s question. What’s your favorite non-delivery (read, besides Pizza Hut and Papa John’s) pizza in town?

My list is too long to print, but I love both the new ones.

Now open: Ziggy’s Pizza

I shot this photo of Ziggy's a few weeks ago. Change that "opening soon" to a "now open."

Ziggy’s Pizza, a family-owned restaurant specializing in rectangular pies, quietly opened Monday at 3700 E. Douglas, in the former Bay Leaf space at Clifton Square.

The restaurant is owned by brothers Ryan and Jamie Verbeckmoes, who are serving pizzas made in a 9×13 pan, lots of toasted sandwiches, appetizers and more. Ziggy’s also has a full bar.

So far, the pizza has been a hit, Ryan says. “We make the dough fresh every day,” he said. “It doesn’t look like any corporate pizza.”

Ziggy’s hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. The cozy space seats 49 people. For more information, call 316-613-2529.
