Question of the week: Wichita’s best burger?

Mmmmm. Freddy’s Steakburger. My favorite.

Mooyah, which opened on Monday, is the latest of several burger chains that have opened in Wichita over the past several years. Some have made it (Five Guys) and some have not (Smashburger.)

This week’s question: What’s your favorite burger served in Wichita?

People always ask me this question when I’m around town giving talks about restaurants, and my answer is always Freddy’s Frozen Custard steakburgers. I just love the super-flat, crispy on the edges, melty cheese goodness of those burgers.

What about you?

Delicious things we probably should not eat (but will)

A couple of chain restaurants are making some decadent, potentially dangerous additions to their menus. They’re so dangerous, in fact, that they’re only available for a few weeks.

Krispy Kreme at 7777 E. Central is offering the Dark Chocolate Kreme doughnut, featuring a dark chocolate filling, dark chocolate icing and chocolate drizzle. Wash it down with Krispy Kreme’s new hot chocolate, which is topped with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. Both are available through Feb. 14.

Over at Smashburger, 3570 N. Woodlawn, the Sin City burger — previously available only at Las Vegas Smashburgers– will be offered until Feb. 27.

It features a burger on an egg bun topped with a fried egg, applewood smoked bacon, melted American cheese, grilled and haystack onions and Smash sauce.

Customers who try it also can register on Facebook to win a trip to Vegas or free Smashburger for a year.

Let the calorie-fest commence!

Question of the week

Five Guys. Two Brothers BBQ and Burger Grill. Fizz Burgers & Bottles. Smashburger. Burger Barn. T.J.’s east.

Hamburger places have been springing all over Wichita the past couple of years, and now we’ve learned that Mooyah, a Texas-based burger chain, plans to open a restaurant here by spring.

In your opinion, which of the newer burger places in Wichita is the best? Answer in the comments section below.

Three excuses for burger binging

Smashburger at 3570 N. Woodlawn is feeling generous this month, and as a result, you have three perfectly good excuses to binge on burgers in January.

The first one is tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 4, when Smashburger will donate 25 percent of proceeds between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. to the Kansas Humane Society.

The same deal will apply on Jan. 11, when money will go to Goodwill of Kansas, and on Jan. 18, when the YMCA is the beneficiary.

Burger news… with a side of chicken

smashchickenBurger-ish news broke out all over Wichita yesterday.

First came news that Jack’s North Hi Carryout was purchased at auction by 25-year-old Austin Herron’s grandmother. Austin will run the restaurant but keep everything the same.

Also, burger chain Smashburger has started smashing more food items, including chicken and salad. The menu at the restaurant at 3570 N. Woodlawn (plus the one in Derby) has just added “Smashchicken” sandwiches, available grilled or fried, and “Smashsalads” to the menu.

Following are the new choices:

• BBQ Ranch Smashchicken topped with applewood smoked bacon, haystack onions, lettuce, tomato, BBQ sauce and ranch dressing on an egg bun

• Avocado Club Smashchicken topped with fresh avocado, applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, ranch dressing and mayo on a multi-grained bun

• Buffalo Smashchicken featuring Frank’s® Buffalo Sauce, crumbled blue cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo on an egg bun

• Honey Mustard Chicken Smashsalad a mix of fresh garden greens, topped with strips of crispy or grilled chicken, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes and red onions with creamy honey mustard dressing

• Chicken Caesar Smashsalad with a mix of fresh garden greens topped with strips of crispy or grilled chicken, parmesan cheese, diced tomatoes and croutons with parmesan Caesar dressing

• Harvest Chicken Smashsalad a mix of fresh garden greens topped with strips of crispy or grilled chicken, marinated balsamic tomatoes, raisins, cranberries, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, blue cheese, with balsamic vinaigrette dressing

• BBQ Chicken Ranch Smashsalad a mix of fresh garden greens topped with strips of crispy or grilled chicken, applewood smoked bacon, diced tomatoes, haystack onions, cheddar cheese, with buttermilk ranch dressing and bbq sauce.
