Playa Azul at 21st & Tyler will close in two weeks

The Playa Azul at 8760 West 21st St. will close in two weeks, manager Daniel Rodriguez said today.

The business just isn’t getting enough traffic, he said. The last day in business will be Saturday, Sept. 29.

Derby’s Plaza Azul at 311 N. Baltimore in Derby closed in January of this year for the same reason. TheĀ Playa Azul in Old Town will remain open, he said.

The about-to-close space has held several restaurants since I’ve lived here, including Semolina, Dino’s, Italian Garden and Senor Tequila. Playa Azul opened there in January of 2011.

Get your fill of tacos and tequila on Thursday

There is nothing those TNT (Team in Training) folks won’t do to raise funds, and for fans of tacos and tequila, that’s a good thing.

TNT stands for Team in Training, and participants must raise money to participate in triathlons, which in turn benefits the most efficient fundraising cause I’ve ever seen, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

On Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m., several local TNT-ers are putting on an event at Playa Azul, 111 N. Washington in Old Town, called Tacos and Tequila.

The event allows diners to choose three tacos from five varieties — beef, asada, chicken, pork and fish. They’ll also get a shot of tequila. Arriba!

Those who don’t want to shoot tequila can get a Dos Equis or a margarita instead. And the restaurant will serve $1.99 blue margaritas as well.

The cost is $15 a person, and the restaurant will donate $5 from each ticket to the cause, which will pay for Team in Training members to compete in The Nation’s Triathlon on Sept. 11 in Washington, D.C.
