Question of the week: Best crab rangoon?

Pei Wei calls its crab rangoon "crab wonton."

All the Chinese food eating I did for this week’s dual dining review has me thinking about one of my favorite Chinese delicacies — the crab rangoon.

Every restaurant makes them differently. Some shape them like flowers. Others fold them in triangles. Some fill them with mostly cream cheese. Others use actual crab.

Which Chinese restaurant in town makes your favorite crab rangoon? I’m sort of partial to Great Wall’s, which are big and perfectly crunchy/creamy. And Pei Wei’s actually taste like crab!

What about you? Answer in the comments section below.

Discount day at Pei Wei

STOP!!!!! Before you head to Pei Wei for lunch today (or tomorrow), grab a can. Diners who bring a non-perishable food item to Pei Wei anytime today or tomorrow, Dec. 7, will get 25 percent off one entree.

All proceeds will be donated to a local food bank.

Wichita’s Pei Wei is at 2441 N. Maize Rd in New Market Square. For more information, call 316-729-7285.

By the way, if you’re new to Pei Wei, I’d recommend the Mandarin Kung Pao with chicken, shown here, or the Thai coconut curry with shrimp.

Question of the week: Best Chinese carryout

Wichita just got a new Panda Express — right down Maize Road from the already popular Pei Wei.

Both serve Chinese food fast, as does Great Wall and any number of other home-owned Chinese places.

The question of the week: What’s your favorite place to grab some quick Chinese carryout? What’s your favorite dish from your favorite place?

I’ll throw in my vote: There’s almost nothing better than Great Wall’s won ton soup with a crab Rangoon on the side for good measure. I’m also a big fan of their chicken fried rice, which is spiked with ginormous hunks of onion. Yum.

Wichita’s second Panda Express open out west

West-side Wichitans now have a tough decision to make when they want fast Chinese food: Pei Wei or Panda Express.

A new west-side Panda Express, Wichita’s second, opened last weekend at 2760 N. Maize Road (316-722-4649), just down the street from the popular Pei Wei.

Wichita’s other Panda Express opened last summer at 11787 E. Kellogg Drive, and I reviewed it last July.

Pei Wei + patience = Free Korean BBQ

Pei Wei at 2441 N. Maize Road will distribute cards good for a free Korean BBQ Beef entree to diners who visit the restaurant today and Thursday.

The cards are redeemable starting Monday, when the restaurant debuts the new dish, and are good through Feb. 6.

The new dish features beef sauteed with green apples and red peppers and is said to have a sweet and smoky flavor. For more information, call 316-729-7285.

Opening today: Bossa Grill

Bossa Grill opens at 5 p.m. today.

Bossa Grill opens at 5 p.m. today.

New restaurant alert: Bossa Grill, the new fast casual South American restaurant at 3242 N. Rock Road, will open today at 5 p.m. (Starting tomorrow, the restaurant’s hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.)

Bossa Grill is to South American food what Pei Wei is to Chinese food. Diners can choose from chicken, beef, seafood and pasta dishes that cost between $7.90 and $12.90, and they get them quickly. I like the sound of the tropical shrimp — grilled shrimp sauteed with bacon, bell peppers and pineapple, and the Bossa Nova chicken, a breaded chicken filet stuffed with herbs and cheese.
