LaMar’s Donuts is participating in National Doughnut Day on Friday.

Friday is National Doughnut Day and a few local doughnut shops are celebrating with freebies.

National Doughnut Day was dreamed up by The Salvation Army in 1938 as  a way to pay tribute to people who’d served in World War I. It’s been around ever since and is celebrated on the first Friday in June.

In Wichita, Krispy Kreme at 7777 E. Central will give away one free doughnut of choice to each customer on Friday. Both the Flying Donuts at 4618 E. Central and LaMar”s Donuts, which has Wichita locations at 3130 N. Rock Road, 3301 E. Harry and 10051 W. 21st St. N. also are participating, offering one free doughnut (as long as it has a hole in it) to each customer. No purchase is necessary for any of the free doughnut offers.

Know of any specials I’m missing? Let me know in the comments below.

Specials for costume wearers, voters

No sooner will Americans have recovered from the excitement of Halloween than they’ll head to the polls to elect a president.

They’re going to need fortification.

Luckily, several restaurants are offering food promotions in observation of the two big days.

On Halloween, Chipotle is putting on its Boorito promotion, which offers a $2 burrito, burrito bowl or order of tacos to anyone who comes in wearing a costume between 4 p.m. and close. Wichita has five Chipotles.

At Krispy Kreme, 7777 E. Central, customers who show up in costume on Halloween will get a free Halloween or pumpkin spice doughnut.

A few days later, Taco Bueno is putting on an event called “Guac the Vote.” Anyone who votes on Nov. 6 will be entitled to a free 2.5-oz. serving of guacamole and tortilla chips all day. No proof of voting is required. Taco Bueno is going to take your word for it. The event is designed to encourage voter turn-out, the company said. Wichita’s Taco Bueno restaurants are at 3530 N. Rock Road and 427 N. Hillside.

Free doughnuts for pirates today

I know a couple of people who could pretty much cater a doughnut party today.

Yes, the rumors are true: Today is “Talk Like a Pirate Day,” and if you play along, Krispy Kreme will give you free glazed dougnnuts.

All day today, anyone who visits the Krispy Kreme at 7777 E. Central and talks like a pirate gets one free Original Glazed doughnut.  Those who walk in wearing full pirate attire get a dozen for free.

I was amused by the list of rules Krispy Kreme shared in a press release. Here they are:

Come to a participating Krispy Kreme location in full pirate costume for one FREE dozen Original Glazed doughnuts. NO WEAPONS ALLOWED!

Talk like a pirate or wear an eye patch to a participating Krispy Kreme shop for one FREE Original Glazed doughnut.

Offer good for one free doughnut per customer who wears an eye patch or talks like a pirate to a Krispy Kreme team member at a participating shop.  One free dozen Original Glazed doughnuts per customer who wears a full pirate costume into a participating Krispy Kreme location.

Krispy Kreme is open 24 hours, so the offer is good until midnight tonight. For more information, call 316-618-3688.

Things we should not eat but want to

I’m filing this new offering from Krispy Kreme, the Cookies & Kreme doughnut and accompanying “Chiller,” both made with Oreos, under the category “The Kinds of Things I Haven’t Allowed Myself To Eat Since College Even Though I’d Really, Really Like To.”

Also on that list:

*Whoppers (the Burger King burger, not the malted milk balls)

*Fish and chips from Long John Silver’s

*Stuffed crust pizza

What’s on your list? Do tell.

In the meantime, those of you with young metabolisms (such as my friend, Sandi’s, gorgeous 15-year-old daughter who often partakes of a sandwich with a nickname I cannot publish here that’s made of a McDonald’s fried McChicken sandwich stuffed inside a McDonald’s Double Cheeseburger) should feel free to indulge in Krispy Kreme’s new treat, available through June 26.

If you do, please report back to me what it tasted like. In very explicit detail.

Delicious things we probably should not eat (but will)

A couple of chain restaurants are making some decadent, potentially dangerous additions to their menus. They’re so dangerous, in fact, that they’re only available for a few weeks.

Krispy Kreme at 7777 E. Central is offering the Dark Chocolate Kreme doughnut, featuring a dark chocolate filling, dark chocolate icing and chocolate drizzle. Wash it down with Krispy Kreme’s new hot chocolate, which is topped with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. Both are available through Feb. 14.

Over at Smashburger, 3570 N. Woodlawn, the Sin City burger — previously available only at Las Vegas Smashburgers– will be offered until Feb. 27.

It features a burger on an egg bun topped with a fried egg, applewood smoked bacon, melted American cheese, grilled and haystack onions and Smash sauce.

Customers who try it also can register on Facebook to win a trip to Vegas or free Smashburger for a year.

Let the calorie-fest commence!

Krispy Kreepy

donutredoAI wrote about these doughnuts today in the Go! section, but they’re so pretty, I had to share them here in color. And I’m definitely going ot have to eat one.

To celebrate the scariness of the season, Krispy Kreme is serving four devilish doughnuts, including a pumpkin-shaped Jack-o-Lantern doughnut, a pumpkin spice doughnut, a chocolate-iced doughnut with Halloween sprinkles and a spiderweb doughnut.
The treats are available through Oct. 31, though the pumpkin spice doughnut will stay through Nov. 28.
