Thanksgiving and Christmas are approaching. It’s time to prepare our palates — and our livers — with a little wine and spirits tasting.

Here are a few events coming up during the next couple of weeks:

The Wines of Fall: This event, put on by The Wichita Chapter of The American Institute of Wine & Food, is from 6:30 to 8:3o p.m. Thursday at the DoubleTree by Hilton Wichita Airport. It’s $35 a person and will offer a preview of 30 popular seasonal wines paired with gourmet food. Experts also will be there sharing entertaining tips and more. Non-members can attend. Oeno’s Sagittarius Zodiac wine dinner: This dinner features three courses, each one paired with wine, and costs $35 a person. It’s at 7 p.m. on Nov. 30. For reservations, call 316-440-5000.

Mike’s Wine Dive wine dinner: This one has four courses and four wines and is at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Mike’s Wine Dive, 4714 E. Douglas. For reservations and to see the menu, visit 

Bourbon and Bites at Chapada: This restaurant at 2142 N. Tyler is having a bourbon dinner, pairing five bourbons with five courses. It starts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday and is $45 a person. For reservations, call 316-201-4694.

Two beer events this week

Beer fans can choose from two events that will expand their hoppy horizons.

The first is a beer dinner scheduled for Wednesday (as in tomorrow) night at Chapada Chophouse & Churrascaria, the delicious Brazilian steakhouse I reviewed on Friday. The dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. and is put on by New Belgium.  It’s $45 a person, and would-be attendees should make reservations by 4 p.m. Wednesday by calling 316-201-4694. Then, on Friday, the Sedgwick County Zoo is putting on a clever tasting event. It will feature 10 to 12 beers that include animals in their names — such as Carlsberg Elephant Beer. Tasters will visit various stations in the zoo, where they’ll sample the beers and enjoy light hors d’ oeuvres.

The event is from 6 to 8 p.m., and admission is $25 for members, $30 for non members. Reservations are due by Thursday by calling 316-266-8213.

Bella Vita, Chapada both add lunch

Two west-side restaurants have recently added lunch to their list of offerings.

Just yesterday, Bella Vita Bistro at 120 N. West St. began offering a four-day-a-week lunch. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, the Italian restaurant will open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering a special lunch menu that includes salads, soups, sandwiches, wraps and pasta dishes  for around $7.95 to $9.95. Also, Chapada Chophouse & Churrascaria at 2142 N. Tyler also has started opening for lunch. The restaurant offers its regular menu from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, adding the churrascaria (tableside shaved meats) option at 4 p.m. The meats and the regular menu are both available all day on Sundays. Chapada’s hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays. Call 316-201-4694 for more information.
