Wichita Buffalo Wild Wings the ‘Smartest Bar in North America’

Apparently, Wichita wing eaters are the smartest wing eaters.

On Tuesday, the  Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant at 3236 N Rock Road became the Smartest Bar in North America, according to Buzztime’s 2013 Smartest Bar competition.

Trivia players at the bar beat out trivia players at 3,300 other bars in the United States and Canada, including two-time defending champion The Mezzanine Lounge in Houston, for the title. The players in Wichita scored the highest points answering a series of sports, art, history and pop culture bar trivia questions. The competition started in April.

The restaurant will get a championship trophy, banner and $500 cash.

Question of the week: Best chicken wings

A reader named John wrote me recently with this probing question:

“I was curious what is considered to be the best wing place in town? It would seem a pity if the only real choice is Buffalo Wild Wings. Are there no great local wing places?”

The bad news for John is that Wichita does not have too many places other than BWW that make wings their main focus. But Wichita does have several restaurants in town that make great wings in addition to their other offerings. I have been particularly impressed by the wings I’ve had at Pacific Coast Pizza and at Wichita Pizza Co.

Who else serves great wings? (Or, as is shown in the picture at right, great drumsticks slathered in wing sauce, which I actually prefer.) Thank you, very kind and diplomatic readers, for pointing out that the morsels pictured here are actually pieces of the wing. Whatever would I do without your kindness and diplomacy?)

Make a bid for Make-A-Wish

Some of the K-State memorabilia up for auction.

Applebee’s is classing up its 2035 N. Rock Road location, and in preparation, it’s auctioning off much of the sports memorabilia that decorates its walls.

Those who stop in the restaurant between now and midnight on Thursday can make bids, silent auction style, on items from the Kansas City Royals, NASCAR, the Kansas City Chiefs, K-State and more. Click here to view a sampling of some of the items up for bid.

All the proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, that awesome organization that let me judge meatloaf recently.

Those who really want to help the Make-A-Wish cause also can do so by dining at Wichita Buffalo Wild Wings locations on Wednesday.  Diners should bring along this printable coupon and a portion of the meal ticket will be given to the cause.

On another note, I missed you. What’d you eat while I was gone?
