Bonefish Grill introducing Saturday lunch

bonefishgrilllogoWichita’s Bonefish Grill is adding Saturday lunch.

The first one will be this coming Saturday, April 12, at the restaurant, 10250 E. 13th St N. The restaurant now has a separate lunch menu that includes a fish sandwich, fish and chips, a vegetarian pasta, a burger and its famous Bang Bang shrimp served in both a Po’ Boy and tacos. It also has a few items from the main menu, including crab cakes and filet mignon, served at  a reduced price. You can check out the full lunch menu on the website.

Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., when Bonefish will switch over to the regular menu. Only a few Bonefish Grills across the country are serving Saturday lunch.

Bonefish Grill adds Sunday brunch

Wichitans have a new Sunday brunch option. This weekend, Bonefish Grill at 10250 E. 13th Street N. introduced a new Sunday brunch that lasts from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It’s not a buffet. Diners order off the menu and chose from dishes such as creme brulee French toast, a crab-topped omelet and a chocolate croissant. There’s also a long list of beverages, including mimosas and Bellinis, as well as some non-alcoholic drinks.

Bonefish is adding the brunch to all its locations but rolling it out at a select few. Wichita and Tulsa were among the early adopters.

Check out the full menu here. I’ll take the shrimp and creamy corn cake with the chocolate croissant, please.

Where to get your Lenten fish

Newport Grill in Bradley Fair

Even though Wichita is no where near an ocean, we still have some decent fish and seafood in town. We even have several restaurant’s whose No. 1 focus is fish.

Recently, I’ve heard from several Lenten observers who are asking for alternatives to Long John Silver’s. (Not that there’s anything wrong with Long John Silver’s, home of the fabulous hushpuppy.)

Here’s a list of ideas.

FINE FISH DINING: Wichita has two finer restaurants whose focus is fish: The upscale Newport Grill at 1900 N. Rock Road and the popular chain Bonefish Grill at 10250 E. 13th St. There’s also always Red Lobster, the reliable chain that has stores at 555 S. West St. and 333 S. Towne East Mall Drive:

FAST AND FRIED: Fish fans also can choose from less fancy fish places, many of which have a loyal local following. Fast fried fish is available at In And Out Fried Chicken & Fish at  447 N. St. Francis and Wichita Fish Company, 1601 W. Douglas, and Pirate Pete’s Seafood Restaurant, 1648 S. Rock Road.

SUSHI SPOTS: Wichita’s list of great sushi places keeps growing. Among the spots to consider sampling during Lent: Kanai at 12111 W. Maple, Hana Cafe at 325 N. Mead, Sumo at 11233 E. 13th St. and Wasabi, which has locations at 912 E. Douglas Ave. and 3242 N. Rock Road.

ALSO: River City Brewing Co. at 150 N. Mosley offers some of Wichita’s most popular fish and chips. Freddy’s Frozen Custard always offers fried fish sandwiches and fish and chips during Lent. And When Pigs Fly Bar-B-Que at 7011 W. Central will offer fish specials such as lemon pepper smoked salmon and BBQ tilapia tacos on Wednesdays and Fridays through April 6. And The Seafood Shop at 6470 E. Central Avenue sells not only fish and seafood to be cooked at home but also carryout fish lunches.

Chef Pitts’ new gig

The hardest working chef in chef business, Doug Pitts, has a new job.

Schane Gross, owner of The Anchor at 1109 E. Douglas, has hired him to get her kitchen in order. This is his first full week on the job, and people are starting to notice his presence, she said.

Gross wants to give Pitts the freedom to offer beer dinners and other special events and to show off his creativity. He’s putting together a small Mother’s Day brunch as one of his first head-of-the-Anchor-kitchen activities.

Pitts most recently headed the kitchen at Press but left in January. Since then, he’s been working on the wait staff at Bonefish Grill.

Give the gift of dining

deniseoutbackMy story for Friday’s Go! section, which you can read today right here, is about the large number of local restaurants who will give you bonus cards or free food if you buy gift cards this holiday season. A smart shopper who gave nothing but gift cards could probably find a way to eat free for a month.

One cool feature some restaurants, such as Outback, Carrabba’s and Bonefish Grill, are offering is the ability to personalize your gift card with a photo if you order it online. I have demonstrated above. It was easy!

Let me know if there are gift card bonuses I failed to mention here.

Gluten-free dining

pfchangslogo I received an e-mail today from a reader named Deanna, whose young grandson has just been diagnosed with Celiac Disease, an inherited autoimmune disease in which the lining of the small intestine is damanged from eating gluten and other proteins found in grains. People with that disease must have gluten-free diets, and Deanna was wondering which local restaurants serve gluten-free meals.

She found a few options at Bonefish Grill, and I already knew that P.F. Chang’s had a gluten-free menu. A quick Google search turned up a list of several more restaurants that maintain gluten-free menus. Among them: Chili’s, Carrabba’s, Outback Steakhouse, On The Border and Ted’s Montana Grill.

Hope that helps, Deanna.

*UPDATE* : Thanks to an alert reader, I can add two more names to the gluten-free menu list: Carlos O’Kelly’s and Olive Garden.
