Local restaurants celebrating Veteran’s Day

Friday is Veteran’s Day, and at least two local restaurants have special events planned to recognize it.

Applebee’s will for the third consecutive year offer veterans a free meal. On Friday, veterans and active duty military members who show proof of service (a U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card, etc. ) can choose from among a list of entrees, including a 7 oz. sirloin, a bacon cheddar burger and Fiesta lime chicken. The deal is good for dine-in only and includes traditional sides. Read the fine print here.

Also, Abuelo’s Mexican restaurant at 1413 N. Waterfront Parkway is putting on a Queso for Heroes fundraiser to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. The restaurant will donate $1 for every chili con queso appetizer sold during Veteran’s Day weekend – from Friday through Sunday — to the project, which provides support and aid to veterans who’ve been wounded.

UPDATE: A blog reader has kindly(?) pointed to this list of other Veteran’s Day specials restaurants are offering, and Wichita has several of them, including Chili’s, Denny’s and Famous Dave’s.

Make a bid for Make-A-Wish

Some of the K-State memorabilia up for auction.

Applebee’s is classing up its 2035 N. Rock Road location, and in preparation, it’s auctioning off much of the sports memorabilia that decorates its walls.

Those who stop in the restaurant between now and midnight on Thursday can make bids, silent auction style, on items from the Kansas City Royals, NASCAR, the Kansas City Chiefs, K-State and more. Click here to view a sampling of some of the items up for bid.

All the proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, that awesome organization that let me judge meatloaf recently.

Those who really want to help the Make-A-Wish cause also can do so by dining at Wichita Buffalo Wild Wings locations on Wednesday.  Diners should bring along this printable coupon and a portion of the meal ticket will be given to the cause.

On another note, I missed you. What’d you eat while I was gone?

Veterans Day specials

veteransday2010_bloomSeveral restaurants around the country will observe Veterans’ Day on Thursday by offering discounts and specials to current and former members of the military.

Veterans with an ID will get a free Bloomin’ Onion and a non-alcoholic beverage of choice on Thursday at Outback Steakhouses. And at Applebee’s, veterans and active-service men and women with ID qualify for a free meal with choices ranging from burgers to chicken to steak.
