Fans of Thai Smile not smiling today

thai smileFans of Thai restaurant Thai Smile are definitely NOT smiling this morning.

The restaurant’s owners announced on Facebook on Saturday that it was closing for good. “Unfortunately we cannot keep opening for personal reasons,” the post read.

It also said that if owners could find a way to reopen the restaurant in the future, they would.

Last summer, owner Sakunphan Pongphan moved the restaurant from its original spot 1524 S. Seneca to a bigger location at 1601 E. Pawnee, the former Li’l Mexico building.

When it first opened four years ago, Thai Smile was called Thai Five.

Bann Thai’s grand opening is today

I’ve heard some good reports out of Bann Thai, the restaurant that took over the space at 6249 East 21st St. N. recently vacated by Siam Cuisine.

Owner Tui Jackson opened the restaurant on April 14, and she’s celebrating her grand opening though today. Those who spend $20 or more get 15 percent off of their bill, and she’s offering free samples of appetizers and Thai desserts today, too. She’ll have live music from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight.

Tui proudly makes everything from scratch, even her sauces. Wichita Eagle Dining Panel member Sigrid Trombley has been twice for lunch and says she likes the food. Her only word of warning: If you like your Thai food hot but not nuclear, order conservatively. Sigrid, who likes spicy food, ordered hers medium hot but was overwhelmed by the results.

The outside of the restaurant still needs a little work. The awning over the front is missing, and a giant banner hung on the front advertises “MASSAGES.” But pull in and you’ll see the restaurant’s name printed in the window.

Bann Thai is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. For more information, call 316-239-5485.

Opening today: Sit @ Thai Express

Sit @ Thai Express is a new restaurant that the owners of Sit @ Thai Bistro, 7603 W. 21st St., are opening today in the former Taco Shop building at 4910 E. Central.

I peeked in the window last week, and it was all pretty and white and hip looking.

The restaurant plans to offer a small menu of five to seven specials each day. The opening day menu today includes yellow curry chicken, spicy cashew nut beef and garlic ginger with beef. The food will be served in to-go containers, and the owners hope to eventually offer a drive-through.

Hours will be 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. For more information, call 316-351-5856.

And just a little FYI, here’s the review I wrote of the Sit @ Empire’s first restaurant back in 2009.

Gindi adding a Thai/sushi buffet

gindi2Gindi Thai & Japanese Diner at 7010 W. 21st St. is one of those restaurants that I love but never get to.

That’s going to have to change now that the restaurant is adding a Thai and sushi lunch buffet, which will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays starting on Tuesday.

The buffet will offer a rotating selection of items from the regular menu — about 10 Thai dishes per day, ranging from Pad Thai to drunken noodles. It’ll also include sushi.

The price will be $6.95. Owners are contemplating offering it all day Sundays, too, but haven’t yet decided.
