Two restaurants contribute to Colo. victim

Two local restaurants are offering 10 percent of their proceeds on Tuesday and Wednesday to the family of one of the victims of the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting last month.

Wichita’s Papa John’s and and Genghis Grills will make the donation to the family of Jonathan Blunk, whose mother, Dawna Nygaard, lives in Andover. Blunk was one of 12 people killed.

Diners can participate by eating at the restaurants on Tuesday and Wednesday. Those who order pizza online at should enter the promo code “Jonathan.”

Wichita has several Papa John’s locations. The city’s Genghis Grill restaurants are at 111 S. Rock Road and 8448 W. Central.

U Grill should open Wednesday

The soon-to-open U Grill.

U Grill is a new restaurant scheduled for a soft opening** Wednesday in the former Linkhaus space at 7817 E. 37th St. N.

The restaurant, owned by recently relocated Oklahoma lawyer Will Clark, will include a Mongolian Grill, where patrons load up a bowl of meats, veggies and sauces and watch as the concoction is cooked. It’ll also serve Philly cheese steaks sandwiches, burgers, brats and hot dogs. Patrons who order those will be given a smaller bowl and can fill them up with whatever toppings they’d like for their sandwiches.

The big draw, Clark said: Everything will be under $7.

Dining room hours will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. A drive-through will be open  until midnight Sundays through Thursdays and until 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

For more information, call 316-425-5730.

By the way, a **soft opening means that the restaurant is getting its bearings, training staff to work with real people and seeing how the flow goes. So if you go, bring patience and a forgiving attitude.

Wichita has two in Genghis Grill contest

If you ask me, Stacy Rogers and Darren Martin should get a prize just for eating in the same restaurant every day for 90 days.

But apparently, we have to help make that happen.

Stacy And Darren both are finalists in a Genghis Grill contest called “Health Kwest.” The two were chosen to represent the stores from a pool of applicants and given one free meal a day at Genghis Grill, a chain that allows customers to build their own stir fry dishes. They also were encouraged to exercise and offered the chance to win $10,000 if they lost the most weight and scored the most Internet votes.

There are more than 50 finalists representing individual restaurants across the country. Stacy represents the west side Genghis Grill at 8512 W. Central. Darren is the finalist from the 111 S. Rock Road store.

Wichitans have from now until Friday to vote for the local finalists. Stacy reports that she’s lost more than 25 pounds, and even though it’s been kind of difficult to get to the restaurant every single day for the past three months, she’s enjoyed the experience.

“I love the food there,” she said. “I could probably eat there every day for the rest of my life.”

Another Genghis Grill

genghisThe west side’s new Genghis Grill is open as of today.

Terry Newman, who opened an east-side Genghis Grill at 111 S. Rock Road in January of 2009, now has an identical counterpart in the former Krispy Kreme building at 8448 W. Central.

The restaurant is a Mongolian grill, which means that customers assemble a stir-fry dish from a bar of raw ingredients then watch as grill chefs cook their concoctions on a giant, circular grill. Wichita’s been on a bit of a Mongolian grill roll in the past few years and now has five — the two Genghis Grills, Gobi Grille at 2319 N. Ridge Road and HuHot Mongolian Grill at 2035 N. Rock Road.

Hours at the new Genghis are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Call the restaurant at 316-729-4745 for more information.
