Popmobile giving out free chips on Saturday

The Popmobile in front of Chicago Field Museum

It’s not the Weinermobile. And it’s not the Popemobile.

It’s the Popmobile, and it’ll be in Wichita on Saturday passing out free samples of Popchips, the snack chips that have been popping up all over Wichita lately.

The Popmobile will be passing out samples at Lucinda’s at 329 N. Mead in Old Town Square at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and then at 3:30 p.m., it will roll over to the Old Cowtown Museum. 1865 W Museum Blvd., to do the same thing.

Popchips are sold at Dillon’s, Target, World Market, and Walgreens and come in flavors such as barbecue, sea salt and vinegar, sweet potato, chili lime and more. For more information on Popchips, visit www.popchips.com.

Free chili for first 100 at Red Robin today

Red Robin, the burger restaurant at 9990 E 13th St., is offering a free cup of chili to the first 100 guests who ask for it today. They open in less than an hour, so start shoveling and warming up the car.

The promotion is playing off the fact that Hell has frozen over today. Hell, Mich., that is. (Doesn’t Michigan freeze over every day of the winter?)

Red Robin’s hours today are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, call 316-425-6300.

Free hummus on ‘Hummus Mondays’

You thought it was just Monday? No, my food friends. It’s HUMMMUS MONDAY.

N&J Mediterranean Cuisine, the excellent Mediterranean restaurant at 5600 E. Lincoln, has started a new special, the details of which are posted on the door of the restaurant. Customers can get a free individual serving of hummus with any food purchase from the menu on Mondays. The offer is good for dine in or carry out.

I’ve always loved this restaurant’s hummus, which tastes extra good scooped up with the fried pita chips it serves in plenitude.

Other great dishes to eat along with your hummus at N&J: the gyro platter, falafel sandwich and chicken hummus schwarma. Yum.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. For more information, call 316-681-3975.

Specials for costume wearers, voters

No sooner will Americans have recovered from the excitement of Halloween than they’ll head to the polls to elect a president.

They’re going to need fortification.

Luckily, several restaurants are offering food promotions in observation of the two big days.

On Halloween, Chipotle is putting on its Boorito promotion, which offers a $2 burrito, burrito bowl or order of tacos to anyone who comes in wearing a costume between 4 p.m. and close. Wichita has five Chipotles.

At Krispy Kreme, 7777 E. Central, customers who show up in costume on Halloween will get a free Halloween or pumpkin spice doughnut.

A few days later, Taco Bueno is putting on an event called “Guac the Vote.” Anyone who votes on Nov. 6 will be entitled to a free 2.5-oz. serving of guacamole and tortilla chips all day. No proof of voting is required. Taco Bueno is going to take your word for it. The event is designed to encourage voter turn-out, the company said. Wichita’s Taco Bueno restaurants are at 3530 N. Rock Road and 427 N. Hillside.

Celebrate taco day with a free taco

Today is National Taco Day, and Taco Bueno restaurants are celebrating by offering free crispy beef tacos through the end of the day today.

To get yours, go to the restaurant’s Facebook page today and print out the necessary coupon.

The offer allows for one taco per customer, per coupon.

Wichita’s remaining Taco Bueno restaurants are at 3530 N. Rock Road and 427 N. Hillside.

Free doughnuts for pirates today

I know a couple of people who could pretty much cater a doughnut party today.

Yes, the rumors are true: Today is “Talk Like a Pirate Day,” and if you play along, Krispy Kreme will give you free glazed dougnnuts.

All day today, anyone who visits the Krispy Kreme at 7777 E. Central and talks like a pirate gets one free Original Glazed doughnut.  Those who walk in wearing full pirate attire get a dozen for free.

I was amused by the list of rules Krispy Kreme shared in a press release. Here they are:

Come to a participating Krispy Kreme location in full pirate costume for one FREE dozen Original Glazed doughnuts. NO WEAPONS ALLOWED!

Talk like a pirate or wear an eye patch to a participating Krispy Kreme shop for one FREE Original Glazed doughnut.

Offer good for one free doughnut per customer who wears an eye patch or talks like a pirate to a Krispy Kreme team member at a participating shop.  One free dozen Original Glazed doughnuts per customer who wears a full pirate costume into a participating Krispy Kreme location.

Krispy Kreme is open 24 hours, so the offer is good until midnight tonight. For more information, call 316-618-3688.

Free lunch Thursday at Intrust Bank Arena

The folks at Intrust Bank Arena just sent out a very mysterious press release.

Starting at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, the first 400 people who show up inside the arena’s south concourse between entrances A and B will be treated to a free lunch of St. Louis-style pork ribs, potato salad and homemade potato chips. During the event, which lasts until 1 p.m., the arena will be announcing plans for a new food-based event.

My guess? Some type of barbecue competition similar to the River City Ribfest that the arena canceled earlier this year. I’ll let you know when I find out for sure.
