Now open: Onyx Bistro

In case your eyes can't tell what's happening in this photo: I took a picture with my iPhone of the front window of Onyx Bistro, mainly because the owner is camera shy. For now, it has just this hand-written sign indicating that you're at the right place.

Onyx Bistro is a new Jamaican restaurant that owner Syreeta Bulgin opened on Monday in the spot that most recently housed Douglas Pitts’ DK Kitchen.

I popped in this afternoon to get a look at the place and to see the menu.

The restaurant, which will be open from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, will serve both breakfast and lunch. Breakfast options range from the expected (eggs, bacon and pancakes) to the unexpected (jerk chicken omelet, fried plantains.) It’s the same story at lunch, when Bulgin is serving burgers, sandwiches, fries and onion rings along with Jamaican style jerk chicken, oxtail with rice and peas and Escovitch fish, which is a dish featuring a fish filet in a sauce made with carrots, onions and vinegar.

The restaurant also is offering a daily $5.99 lunch special (chef’s choice) that includes a drink.
