I was asked by the folks at Davis Moore to help judge an employee chili cookoff today that was set up to help raise money for United Way.
I never say ‘no’ to a chance to eat for a cause, as you know, or to share my opinion about food. Plus, when I found out that my co-judges would be Wichita fire chief Ron Blackwell and the reigning Miss Kansas Lauren Werhan, I knew I had to participate.
We had four chilis to judge, and I had a definite favorite — a smoky, spicy bowl of heaven with amazing texture made by sales manager Tim Dugan. But, alas, I could not talk my fellow judges — especially Chief Blackwell — out of choosing a more traditional bowl created by accountant Sara Meeks.
That chief seems to be used to being in charge or something.
My next opportunity to pass judgment on other people’s cooking comes up on Monday, when I’ll help pick a winner in WSU’s Elliott School’s Top Chef ESC Sandwich Contest. It’s from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Elliott School’s commons.
Hoping the chief is busy that day.
