Wichita woman receives life sentence for murder

Misty Tague could barely choke out her apology between sobs today, as she learned she would spend life in prison for her role in killing a Wichita man nearly two years ago.

“I’m so sorry,” Tague, 30, told the family of Titus Franklin, before being sentenced for his murder. “I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.”

Tague said she didn’t know Franklin before he died during a robbery she participated in on Oct. 25, 2007, in the CitiHost Motel on South Broadway. Witnesses say Tague and Leslie Keith took drugs, a gun and money. Keith was convicted of shooting Franklin and sentenced to life in prison last month.

“I didn’t want Titus dead,” Tague said.

But prosecutor Aaron Breitenbach said Tague was the “driving force” behind the robbery.

“She provided the weapons and planned the robbery,” Breitenbach said, repeating what Keith told police

Judge Joe Kisner said he didn’t believe all of what Keith said.

“He kind of made up whatever he would to benefit him at the time,” Kisner said during Tague’s sentencing this afternoon.

It took about eight months to solve the killing. Tague was arrested in June 2008. Keith was apprehended in August 2008 in Texas.

Tague was convicted of felony murder and aggravated robbery during a trial in May. Felony murder is a death during the commission of a dangerous crime.

Under Kisner’s sentence, Tague will have to serve 20 years on the murder charge, then 7 years on the robbery charge, before being eligible for parole.

Two sentenced in 2007 deadly robbery; another awaits trial

Two of three men charged in the robbery and killing of a 47-year-old Wichita man last summer received their sentences Wednesday.

Sedgwick County District Judge Terry Pullman sentenced Corey Logan, 23, to eight years in prison for his role in the shooting death of Stanley Bloom. Logan pleaded guilty March 5 to voluntary manslaughter. He’ll also be under three years’ supervision after being released from prison.

Frederick Smith, 22, received a six-year suspended sentence after his April 2 plea of no contest to conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and two counts of aiding a felon. A no-contest plea doesn’t admit guilt but concedes the state has enough evidence to earn a conviction at trial. It results in the same conviction as a guilty plea. Pullman also ordered three years’ probation for Smith.

Both are expected to testify against John Sampson, 42, who is accused of shooting Bloom. Sampson awaits trial, charged with first-degree premeditated murder. Police found Bloom on July 10, 2007, dead in the bedroom of his home at 313 N. Millwood, in the Delano neighborhood.

The three men remained at large for months. Smith was arrested in December during a traffic stop. Logan was found after being arrested on an unrelated case in Missouri and was returned to Wichita to face these charges. Sampson was arrested and charged in January.

Gun + drugs = 15 years

A faulty tail light led to a Wichita man going to prison for half a lifetime.

When Wichita police pulled over Nicholas Sandefur, 30, back on April 29, 2006, officers saw the butt of a gun tucked in his pants. They also found four bags of methamphetamine in his car.

Because he had a gun and drugs, a federal judge sentenced Sandefur to 15 years in prison this week. Sandefur pleaded guilty in November. There is no parole from federal prison.
