Public defender Lacy Gilmour argued that, with people now facing 25 years to life in prison, the courts should more closely examine the mental state of the accusers.

The law is so new, however, there are no appellate cases to help guide judges in such requests. Prosecutor Justin Edwards said he’s only seen such motions granted twice in his nine years on the job.

Marlin Williams is off to prison for the next two decades, because he took a 15-year-old girl from Wichita to work the streets of Dallas as a prostitute.

Williams, 38, was sentenced to 246 months in prison last week, and courthouse sources say he continued to blame the teenage girl for his predicament.

Actually, it was state lawmakers, who passed a law against aggravated human trafficking, that gave prosecutors the power to charge adults who recruit or transport girls for illegal sexual activities. Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc Bennett, who directs the sex crimes trial unit, said before the law went into effect in 2007, there wasn’t a charge that would bring substantial prison time.

Williams was the first person in Sedgwick County charged under the 2007 law. A jury convicted him in September.

Judge Clark Owens based Williams’ hefty sentence last week on a criminal history that dated to the 1980s.

The girl testified that she was a runaway who ended up being taken in by a women whose name she didn’t know. There, the girl said she made $6,000 in about two weeks of performing sexual favors for customers along a stretch of Northwest Highway near I-35 in Dallas. She said she gave the money to Williams.

Williams remains in the Sedgwick County Jail, awaiting prison placement by the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Listening to the story of a former teenage prostitute from Wichita this week provides a glimpse into a troubled world of runaways and other youngsters forced to live on their own means.

But it’s a much bigger problem than the story told this week by the 15-year-old Wichita girl in the human trafficking trial of Marlin Williams.

Two years ago, ABC News reported a study estimating some 650,000 teenagers in the U.S. had sold sex for drugs or money. In Dallas, where the Wichita girl testified that Williams took her to work the streets, police found girls as young as 12 working in strip clubs this year.

The girl told the Sedgwick County jury this week Williams promised her he would take her off the streets as soon as he raised enough money to open his own club.

There also seems to be a part of popular culture, including the music of Lil’ Wayne, which the girl said she listened to and quoted on her MySpace page, that appears to promote treating women as sex objects.

Police intervened and sent the girl back to Dallas, where she is now in a state program for independent living and reunited with the daughter she had at age 14, then abandoned.

Still, thousands of others remain on the streets.

Wichita police were searching Buddy Jones’ room, looking for evidence that might show he killed a missing woman, when they opened a nightstand drawer and found nude photos of a young adolescent girl.

Now Buddy Jones is standing trial this week, accused of sexual exploitation of a child, while he awaits another trial on charges of first-degree murder.

The jury is expected to get the case today of eight photos found in his nightstand. Prosecutor Kevin O’Connor has had police and medical witnesses describe the photos, which they said were of a young girl with her genitals exposed.

Defense lawyer Brad Sylvester told the jury that the pictures belonged to Jones’ sister’s boyfriend, who also lived in the house.

Jones is also charged with first-degree murder in the disappearance of Michelle Rawls in July 2006. Jones was arrested and charged with her murder nine months later. Her body was never found.

When police were searching the house where Jones lived, they discovered the Polaroid photos of the girl, along with a Polaroid camera and pictures from a child porn Web site that showed another young female in similar poses. O’Connor said authorities have not been able to locate the girl in the pictures found at Jones’ house.

The Kansas Court of Appeals overturned a 78-count conviction against William James Blomquist (pictured left), citing the Anderson County Attorney Fred Campbell with “gross and flagrant misconduct” in repeatedly bringing up homosexuality, because that had nothing to do with the charges against him.

The court ruled “it was unreasonable for the State to assume that a sexual desire for children is among those desires which define a homosexual orientation.”

In other words, straight men can, and do, molest boys. Calling attention to sexual orientation served no purpose but to inflame emotions and prejudice the jury, the court said in its ruling.

Blomquist, 34, will get a new trial on charges of molesting and sodomizing a 12-year-old, mentally retarded boy.
