Where is your favorite donut?

So we have this intern for the summer. Her name is Jessie Gorges. She just got back from lunch and was asked where she went.

“Maybe eating donuts for lunch wasn’t the best idea,” was her reply.

Don’t misunderstand. It’s not that she didn’t like what she had at the Donut Whole. She did. It’s just that, well, you know, donuts for lunch? Like I said, she’s an intern.

Anyway, the conversation quickly turned to where the best donuts are. I am a fan of Lamar’s. So is Carrie Rengers. Jerry Siebenmark swears by Krispy Kreme.

What about you? When it’s your turn to pick up donuts for the office, where do you stop?

Haven’t tried the Donut Whole, but I plan to. I loved Sugar and Spice, but they’re long gone, so presently I guess it’s Krispy Kreme.

Back in the 1970’s, I used to stop off at the original Lamar’s Doughnut Shop and order a couple of Lamar’s doughnuts and a cup of coffee. At that time, Lamar himself ran the shop. His old doughnut shop was located in Kansas City, Missouri, just east of Main Street and a bus stop, on about 31st Street. As I recall, his shop only had stools at a counter.

This was not far from where Johnny Lazia, political boss Tom Pendergast’s right hand man in charge of crime, was machine gunned to death in front of the Park Central Hotel near Armour and Gilham back in the early 1930’s.

I wonder if Johnny Lazia was a customer of Lamar’s Doughnuts back in those early years?

If you have a doughnut from the Whole – you will be spoiled for life. Not that I don’t like Krispy Kreme – it’s just that I can get the same experience by pouring equal amounts of sugar and warm oil in my mouth.
I’m able to convince myself a Whole doughnut is healthy since it is baked AND I get at least one other ingredient (as the cereal commercials say – It’s part of a well balanced breakfast).

Agree with Oz. Lamar’s has good plain jane donuts and long johns. But thick mint, peanut butter cup, and root beer floats at Donut Whole are the way to go! Nice to treat yourself to that AND a band on the weekends too.

The Donut Whole! By far and away these are the best donuts in Wichita. They are the most creative. Great atmosphere! Top notch, unique coffee. Art. These donuts have soul! The majority of their ingredients are locally sourced! Who puts that kind of thought into their product? We should be proud of the Donut Whole. The donuts taste fantastic! I shall have the half-nutty maple, and the citrus sunshine please!

well, I’d have to agree with the masses and say The Donut Whole. You wont find anything else like it in the city. And, after a Donut Whole donut, you’ll be FULL. Oh, and on Wednesdays,( i think) they have Vegan Donuts. I’m not a vegan, but I have to say, I think I like them even better than the regular.

Go to the Donut Whole. Really.

Cake donuts are the best, and Donut Whole makes the best cake donuts ever. Our family favorites Cherry citrus, Thick mint, and classic. Didn’t used to eat many donuts at our house, now at least once a week.

Great donuts, great coffee, sodas made with natural sugar, nice employees, music on the weekend, cool art in the bathroom, local ingredients, Go to the Donut Whole if you haven’t already.

In the donut world this is like comparing apples to oranges. For cake donuts, The Donut Whole makes original cake donuts that are truly the best in town. If you’re wanting the best plain glazed fried donut, then it’s Krispy Kreme. If you want any other style of donut like long johns, old fashioneds, or bear claws…then you go to Lamar’s.

  34. Posted June 24, 2009 at 1:47 pm | Permalink

I say the Donut Whole has the freshest, tastiest donuts. Their King Midas (like a payday bar melted on a donut!) is the best, but I also love the peanut butter chocolate donut. DW donuts are a Wichita original, made with Kansas flour. What’s not to love?

Jerry, you and me both. While Lamar’s is my favorite, like I mentioned above, it’s not like I turn any down. Kind of like picking your favorite child, I guess.

Val, don’t feel bad that you’ve never been to the Donut Whole. It’s been open for just a few months. However, it has established quite a loyal following by all indications from comments on this blog. When you go, try to PB&J one. It’s yummy.

I dined at the Donut Whole for lunch today. All of the donuts are exactly the same (at least is was today). The donut’s frostings were very good. I sampled the maple bacon, orange and cream, peaches and cream, King Midas and Citrus Sunrise (I think that’s what it is called. Fruity Pepples on it.) While good, Lamar’s beats it hands down for cake donuts. If this was a frosting competition then The Donut Whole would win it. I would love a maple bacon birthday cake!

I will give it another shot soon, but in a morning to truly experience the essence of all things donut.

The best donuts ever in Wichita were glazed donuts at Ketteman’s Bakery – gone for many years. Dillons glazed donuts are wonderful and overlooked.
