Very quietly, a federal program to jump-start consumer lending kicked off today.
Experts think the program could ease skin-tight consumer and business credit, which would translate into needed business for everyone from car dealers to property owners.
It will be interesting to see if this move works – and what kind of partisan criticism it draws.
I met Jeff Witherspoon for the first time on Saturday for a story dealing with the downturn. He runs the Consumer Credit Counseling. That was fun, we had a long chat about how cheap we both are. I can’t think of a better dovetailing between job and personality. When he talks about the wisdom of clipping coupons and turning down his water heater to 120 degrees, he’s knows because he’s done it.
Of course, he and his staff are incredibly busy these days. They go out when a layoff has been announced to talk to the victims about how to live on less. The irony is that some of the banks and other groups that fund the agency are reconsidering how much they’re contributing, which could lead to some belt tightening by the group that teaches belt tightening.
